Steiner International – Work on Cruise Ships

The perfect pampering for any guest on a luxury cruise line involves a visit to the spa and beauty salon. Cruising has long since become popular with more than the stereotypical zimmerframe-wielding retirees, and fitness instructors are in high demand. Steiner International is one of the most prominent recruiting agencies for spa departments in the world cruising industry, employing over 2,000 crew members to work on cruise ships every year.

Steiner - Work on a Cruise Ship

Steiner – Work on a Cruise Ship

As global leaders in the spa industry, Steiner recruits hairdressers, fitness, reception and beauty professionals from all over the world to work in beauty spas, gyms and salons onboard 136 luxury cruise liners owned by 16 different cruise companies! These jobs really are “a job of a lifetime”, giving you the chance to gain valuable experience furthering a career that you love. Not only will you be trained and become more qualified, you’ll be earning a potential packet, and travelling to some of most beautiful ports around the world.

Cruise Job Requirements

The basic requirements for applying for a position with Steiner are that you are qualified in your chosen profession and you are at least 18 and a half years old. Almost all positions require a relevant NVQ level 2 or equivalent. Steiner can take you straight from college to work if you have reached the necessary standard. Positions such as beauty and massage therapists favour applicants who have completed additional courses like face/body electrics, aromatherapy, reflexology, and Indian head massage. Massage therapists also require at least 150 hours of practical experience.

Hairdressers are required to have at least one year’s salon experience working their own column. Nail technicians have to be qualified to NVQ level 2 or a product house equivalent; Creative, for example. They must also be able to demonstrate a full set of acrylic nails (French polish) in 70 minutes. Acupuncturists require a Master’s Degree or equivalent in Acupuncture and/or Chinese Medicine. This must be from a recognized university. Supplementary courses such as Tai Chi, Oi Gong, and Tui Na are a bonus, but not mandatory.

Fitness instructors must be 20/21 years of age, with at least 6 months experience, and have a gym instructorship certification such as YMCA Gym Instructor Level 2 or Personal Trainer qualifications. To qualify for a position onboard, instructors have to agree to obtain an Exercise to Music Level 2, which is an intensive week long course run through Steiner or an established outside company (i.e., Premier/YCMA). All fitness instructors will complete Steiner’s two-week exclusive boot camp, where they learn skills as diverse as teaching spinning to putting together a detox seminar! Spa receptionists must be at least 21, have an immaculate appearance, English language skills and be well grounded in sales. Knowledge of any other languages is a plus, but not a necessity!

Steiner Job Interviews

Once Steiner has received your application form, you will be sent information about your interview via the same communication method that you used to apply. You will then be asked to accept, reschedule or cancel your attendance at a proposed interview date. UK interview dates are held every two weeks in the London headquarters for beauty, massage, nail technicians, acupuncture and reception staff. Fitness instructor interviews are held once a month. Please see www.theonboardspa.com/ for more specific information and contact details of your Regional Employment Manager.

At the interview, you will be asked to fill out various forms and carry out a written and practical trade test. Ensure that you dress smartly and wear appropriate uniform and footwear. You will also need to bring with you any necessary trade tools. Eva Yarburg, Head of International Recruitment at Steiner Training Ltd, knows exactly which applicants she is after:

“We are looking for a candidate with professionalism, confidence and a great standard of appearance and service. Good communication skills, flexibility and a cheerful ‘smiley’ personality are also very important. It will be someone who has the ability to adapt to different situations as well as being flexible, and someone who is willing to take up a challenge and work hard.”

If you are successful at your interview, you will receive a Starter Pack with a C1/D visa letter and a contract. This US visa costs £63 and is compulsory in order to work on ships with Steiner, and to obtain it you will need to book an interview with your country’s US Consulate ( www.usembassy.org.uk ). You will then be asked to apply for an Enhanced Disclosure check (£50) to ensure that you have no extreme criminal history, and you will be required to have a valid passport prior to obtaining visas and travelling. All these documents are vital for your training place at the Steiner International Academy.

Cruise Job Training Academy

Situated in Harrow Weald, Middlesex, the Steiner Training Academy is an elegant Victorian mansion, surrounded by tranquil gardens. Every successful applicant must complete the pre-Shipboard Training Module before being allocated to his or her vessel. During this training you will be taught the signature treatments and will perfect your skills to prepare yourself for a successful life at sea.

The Academy is the central base of Steiner, and can accommodate up to 200 staff at once from all corners of the globe. There are several lecture rooms, where students learn various Steiner skills to equip them for ship life, along with a café serving subsidised food, and various areas to sit and relax during breaks. Depending on training and positions available, the training length will vary from 2 days to 12 weeks. Other meals and accommodation are provided at the YMCA in Watford, London.

Steiner Cruise Ship Spa Jobs

Steiner Cruise Ship Spa Jobs

Once you have your qualifications, you will be trained in Steiner professional treatments, special techniques and products. Steiner pays for the time you are in training, and Eva is keen to tell us of further staff perks, “Working with Steiner encourages personal growth and independence. It is worth it to work onboard, just for the education! Working at sea gives you a free ride  – your training would cost £3000 if you had to pay for it. Other staff benefits include product discounts and free treatments when time allows.”

Whilst the expert training is complimentary, there are various other costs incurred during your time at the Academy. Firstly, there is the Norwegian Medical, which you need to pass to complete your training. This is a maritime standard requirement for all cruise ships, and will set you back £190. You must perform this specialized medical with Steiner; those administered by your local GP are not accepted. As well as this, you will be given any required travel vaccination injections during training.

You will also be asked to provide £275 in either cash, sterling travellers cheques or via a bank draft for your maritime and facilities fee, and £32 for the training uniform. These fees are due on the first day of training (not at the interview). If you require a Sea Survival certificate, this might also be completed during training, although it is usually done onboard the ship. Other expenses include the £50 Airport Tax and the hotel cost when joining your ship– this should be no more then £100. The uniform appropriate to your ship will cost approximately £100. Last but not least, you will need to cover the cost of a return flight ticket as well as money for socialising whilst at the Academy! Phew!

You must be prepared and ready to go when you come in to training, because if you are successful you may not get enough notice to go home before joining a new ship. Positions arise continually and if you are a good worker, you may be offered a ship with only a few days notice.

Working on a Cruise Ship

Once you have passed the training you will be assigned to a new ship and contract.

Unfortunately, it is rarely possible to choose your own ship or the same ship as a friend. Couples cannot work on the same ship, as cruise company’s policies allocate a separate amount of cabins to fill with their own staff. The first contract is 8 months long, and you will be out of the country for the entire period. Steiner staff members are entitled to 1 and a half days off per week.

Steiner pays for the flight to the ship and your flight back to the UK on completion of your contract. You are responsible for any hotel and transfer costs. Steiner provides medical insurance cover only when you are actually onboard. In the worst case scenario, if someone does not enjoy ship life and wishes to break their contract, then they have to fly back home at their own expense and they cannot re¬apply to work for Steiner again.

The salary depends on your profession, although most salaries are commission-based on sales and services. Whilst onboard, your tips and retainer are paid in $US cash. When your contract is over your final commission cheque will be sent home – but more detailed information is given at the interview stage.

Finally, Steiner offer a Back2Sea program designed exclusively for existing Steiner cruise staff that wish to return to sea for another contract. After you have completed your first 8 months contract, you will have the option to do 6 months on the second contract. There are wide ranging opportunities for your career, including managing a cruise line spa, supervisory roles and training positions at Steiner Training Academy or working in a land based spa. Eva further points out the long-term advantages of completing a contract with them: “We are synonymous with luxury cruise liners and famous for our rigorous training. We focus on developing your customer service skills, standards and professionalism. That’s why most staff can get a job ‘anywhere’ after working at sea with Steiner.”

Please visit www.onespaworld.com for more information. To apply directly to Steiner and start an exciting new career at sea, send your CV to Jan Green at [email protected] or post your application to: Steiner Training Limited, The Lodge, 92 Uxbridge Road, Harrow Weald, Middlesex, HA3 6DQ.

Cruise Line Recruitment Events

Cruise job fairs and recruitment events are a perfect opportunity to get some face-to-face time with the managers that are screening and hiring job applicants. Where can you find information on these recruiting events and interview dates? Should you just show up at these job fairs or should you register ahead of time? Here are some answers as well as how to be successful at one of these cruise job recruitment events.

Where to Find Cruise Line Recruitment Events

Recruitment Agency Websites – Various cruise lines use hiring partners to assist with screening potential candidates for cruise jobs. Although some agencies prefer to use Skype for interviews, other agencies may schedule numerous interviews on the same day in major cities across the country you live in.

Cruise Ship Concessions Websites – Steiner Leisure, one of the largest onboard concessions for cruise jobs, features interview dates on their website on an ongoing basis. Job-seekers looking for a job as a Hair Stylist, Nail Technician, Beauty Therapist, Massage Therapist, or Fitness Trainer should keep an eye on Steiner’s global recruitment dates.

Cruise Ship Job Fairs – NCL America, a division of Norwegian Cruise Line, offers job fairs throughout the year at select cities throughout the USA. They are one of the only cruise lines that offer numerous jobs for Americans. Keep an eye on this link for upcoming job fairs.

Recruitment Events for Cruise Ship Medical Jobs – Carnival UK offers Medical Open Days onboard select P&O Cruises and Cunard Line cruise ships. These open days provide an opportunity for medical professionals to gain information about working on cruise ships as well as apply for a job as a doctor or nurse.

College Campus Recruiting Events – In the past Royal Caribbean has hosted their Global Casting Summit at colleges around the USA. Job-seeking students can sign up for the quarterly Royal Caribbean Connection Newsletter that lists upcoming recruiting events.

Get Invited to a Cruise Line Recruitment Event

Although you may find a date and specific location of an upcoming recruitment event, other times you may only find a date and the name of a city. So now what? Although your first instinct may be to phone and find out exactly where the interview is taking place, there is a better way.

And, those that think they should just show up to a recruitment event think again. Getting an invitation, letting the recruiter know you are coming, or requesting to pre-register are better first steps.

Job seekers need to email their resume along with a cover letter (body of the email) to the recruiting employer. At the end of the email (cover letter), applicants should add a request similar to, “Please consider me for the upcoming interviews in Toronto.” In other cases, you may need to complete an online application first then send a follow up email requesting to be considered for an upcoming interview.

How to Be Successful at Cruise Line Recruitment Events

Do Your Homework – Start with researching everything you can about the cruise line or concession you want to work. Understand which companies that the agency represents. Get to know what it’s like to live and work onboard including cabin sharing, hours worked, alcohol policy, multinational and multicultural crew, and homesickness. Typically these events are meant to shed light on these topics and scare away candidates that are prepared to work on cruise ships.

Dress for Success – Treat these events as you would for any land-based job interview. Dress professionally. Pay attention to hair, make up, facial hair, tatoos, etc. You don’t want to call attention to yourself in a negative way. Bring some type of professional bag or folder to hold any papers, documents, pen, cell phone (remember to turn off), keys, etc. You want to look organized and put together.

Bring Copies of Your Resume Package – Although you have already sent your resume and application package ahead of time, you need to bring extra copies. An application package should include your resume, cover letter, certificates, copy of your passport, references and an appropriate photo. You may be interviewed by two or three different recruiters. Have an application package ready for anyone that needs one.

Be Prepared to Answer Interview Questions – Interview preparation is what will make you stand out over other applicants. You need to be prepared how you will introduce yourself to the interviewer.  Plus, get an idea of what you will be asked in an interview (more homework). Don’t just go over these questions. Practice your answers out loud.

Bring a List of Questions – Be prepared with a list of questions that you want to ask. Careful with these types of questions because you want to come off as being prepared not asking questions that you should already know the answers to. A couple of questions could be about how soon the recruiter expects to make a decision, what the sales target would be for you, or what the opportunities for advancement are like.

Steiner – The Interview Process

steiner cruise ships interview dates

In my last blog I spoke about applying for Steiner Leisure, now I’ll talk about the interview process. After Id recieved the email advising me of my interview date, I confirmed the date to the recruitment manager for Australia and New Zealand, who sent the interview date. Basically the one that interviews you will be the one to email you all information and forms and help you along your journey right up until getting onto a cruise ship, from what I’ve gathered if all goes well.

It is a group interview, ours had 5 fitness instructors and 4 massage & beauty therapists. (Be prepared, if you apply for massage you are also applying for beauty – so bring all that’s necessary for beauty as well as massage, I learnt from this as I only bought what I needed for massage but I had to do a mini facial and someone was kind enough to share their products so I was lucky! It could be different for you, but it pays to be extra organised).

First there was the presentation. This went for about an hour and was all about Steiner and some of the 131 cruises they hire staff to work on, there’s no real need to ask questions as pretty much everything is covered but it always pays to ask a few if you can.

Then, we had to do a speech in front of the group, answering questions which we were able to note down before our speech, some of which were: our qualifications, our profession, why do we want to work for Steiner, what can we bring to the company and why should Steiner employ us, if we have any tattoos, or a criminal record.

After everyone was done and the recruitment manager had recorded everything, the beauty and massage interviewees had to do the practical, which was a 15 minute back massage and a 15minute mini facial.

We were asked questions during our treatment, such as what muscle are you massaging, why are you massaging it, what aftercare would you give after a massage, and for the facial we were asked what skin type do they have, and what products would you recommend. We did our treatments on the fitness instructors in the interview.

Then, after this we were led back to the interview room. We were told we’d recieve an email on if we were successful in three days. The fitness instructors then had to their practical.

I did read one review of an interview and they had a written test as well! So I scrubbed up on my knowledge since studying just in case but this wasn’t actually included in my interview.

Also, I’m not the strongest speaker, so I was freaking out! Meditation and being extra prepared for what happens in the interview really helped me. Check out ‘grounding meditation’ if you also struggle with this. I’m guessing you’ll do great if youre reading this, to do the best you can in the interview!

Some points that helped me were

 – be confident

 – smile

 – firm handshake and look interviewer in the eye

 – look the part, dress professionally

Goodluck with your interview!

I found out three days later by email that I was successful which was great news.

Keep posted for my next blog about all the paperwork etc and Medicals / police checks you have to organise and what you have to pay etc.

 Thanks for reading!

Misconceptions About Working On Ships

  • Work Onboard

When was 16 years old and studying Beauty Therapy at college, on one of the days a tall beautiful well-dressed lady came in and told us about this magical company called Steiner, and also told us how we could do a 9-month contract, travel the world and come home with hundreds of thousands in savings. This is when my obsession for Steiner/working onboard cruise ships began.

At that age, all I knew was that I wanted to travel, and of course, everyone wants to make money, so it seemed like the dream job!

After a few years working in the Beauty Industry, I finally decided it was time to fulfil my dream of working on a luxury cruise ship, and I applied to Steiner Leisure.

In this post, I want to talk about misconceptions of Steiner & ships, and what I wish I had known before going.  Some of my expectations were very different from the reality.

steiner cruise ships interview dates

Time off When training, they make out like you will have all the time off in the world.  You can earn time off by hitting your target, and hitting your target is easy so you will have loads of money and hardly ever work. This isn’t the case. In the contract, you legally have to have 1 and a half days off, every 8 days.  This can be given to you in one full day or 3 half days and is up to your Manager to decide. Some managers are brilliant at giving hours out and then letting you take them when you want to. Some managers are awful and hardly ever give hours out, and when they do, they decide when you will take it.

steiner cruise ships interview dates

The money When I was at the Academy, I had a day spent learning how to work out commissions.  The teacher said to work to out my commission based on £7,000 in 7 days which would probably be our target. I worked out that I would be earning £3,000 a month. I was buzzing. However what she didn’t mention is the £7,000 target would be spread over 14 days, and £7,000 is a lot harder to hit than I originally thought .

steiner cruise ships interview dates

Savings Now, everyone is under the illusion that working on a ship enables you to save loads because you have no rent, no food bills and no car.  While this is true, there are expenses you do have:

Wifi Of course, which you will need to contact home.  You can wait to get wi-fi when in port as it cheaper, but you won’t always find it, and won’t always be getting off the ship.

Food when outside Of course, if you have a day off the ship, at some point you will get hungry, so most crew members find they spend a lot on eating out.

Excursions While in a lot of ports you will just get off the ship and have a mooch around. In others you will probably want to do an excursion.  These can cost anywhere from £30 to £500 so this is possibly another thing you will be spending your money on.

steiner cruise ships interview dates

Deck privilege’s I assumed that when on board, in my free time, I would be sunning myself by the pool and drinking a cocktail in the sun, or in the evening I would be going to see the show.  Now while I have been fortunate to have always been able to do this on whatever ship I have been on, I know other people are not so lucky. There are crew areas and guest areas and only certain departments are allowed in guest areas.

steiner cruise ships interview dates

I thought the food in the mess would be good. Cruise ships are renowned for serving up the best dishes, and whilst that is true for the passengers, for the crew it’s a little different. It is definitely quantity over quality. I am by no means a fussy eater, but there were days where I would struggle to find something I fancied.  Not from lack of choice, but often things would just taste very different to how you would expect them to.  For example, the veg didn’t taste like veg.  Probably because they had been out of the ground for so long.

steiner cruise ships interview dates

Those are just a few things that I expected about ship life that proved to be a little different in reality.  I hope this gives you a more realistic view of working on ships and if you are thinking of working on them, or you are currently working on ships, I would love to know some of your misconceptions .

I wanted to travel and still work at the same time.

They were looking for qualified hairdressers who were confident in doing hair up.

What was the interview process like for this position?

About 25 people were gathered in a room and everyone had a chance to get up and talk about themselves in front of the group. Then the interviewers picked who they want and we did a trade test that afternoon.

Can you remember any of the questions they asked you?

Not really, they more wanted to see how you spoke in public.

What kinds of answers do you think the interviewers are looking to hear from a successful candidate?
