21 Top Destinations for Active and Adventurous Vacations
Vacation means lying by the pool, hitting up the buffet and chilling out on the beach, right? Well, maybe for some people. But if that's not your idea of a good time, you're not alone. If you want more activity and adventure when you travel, you have lots of options.

"People have more access to the world now than any generation before," says Chris Chesak, executive director for North America/Oceania at the Adventure Travel Trade Association .

What's more, an adventurous vacation doesn't always mean an expensive one. "Adventure travel at its core is incredibly economical," he says. Here are some of the top destinations for active travelers seeking active and adventurous vacations.
1. South Walton, Florida
Located in the northwest side of Florida on the Gulf of Mexico, the town of South Walton provides access to all kinds of outdoor activities and adventures from hiking, canoeing, kayaking and camping. You can stroll the Seaside Farmer's Market every Tuesday and Saturday, and then take a bike ride up the coast to Grayton Beach State Park .
From there, you can set up at one of the 59 campsites or venture out on a hike — either an easy one-mile loop or a more adventurous 9-mile trek. South Walton boasts 26 miles of beautiful coastline to enjoy, so take advantage with stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking or a fishing tour.

2. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
For an adventure vacation like no other, visit Ecuador's Galapagos Islands . Walk in the footsteps of naturalist Charles Darwin as you learn how the geological history of this chain of islands allowed unique animal species to flourish. You can see endangered giant tortoises, sea lions, flamingos, Galapagos penguins, sleeping sharks, marine iguanas and birds such as the finches that first inspired Darwin's theory of evolution.
There are also plenty of opportunities for diving, snorkeling, surfing, boating and hiking. If you have time, don't miss the Ecuadorian mainland , which has some of the most beautiful canopy walks — raised walkways above the forest floor — in the world, says Chesak.
3. Harpers Ferry, West Virginia
The Appalachian Trail passes through Harpers Ferry , a small town only 60-odd miles from Washington, D.C. You can look down from high bluffs to the dramatic meeting point of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, where the borders of West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland come together. It's also where white abolitionist John Brown led a failed slave revolt in 1859 after raiding a U.S. armory.
Many active travelers arrive by bike on the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal trail and stay at the town's cozy bed-and-breakfast accommodations. "It's a fantastic multi-day bike trail from D.C. to Harpers Ferry and beyond," says Chesak. Go for a day hike or stay longer to raft, fish and canoe. You can also go zip lining and rock climbing.

4. Etosha National Park and Skeleton Coast, Namibia
Namibia's commitment to conservation is very attractive to active travelers, says Chesak. More than 40 percent of this country on the southwestern coast of Africa is under conservation management. You can visit Etosha National Park in the north to see the largest free-roaming populations of black rhinos and cheetahs, as well as lions and elephants.
Travel the northern Skeleton Coast to view dramatic sand dunes that run into the Atlantic Ocean. The coastal city of Swakopmund, 170 miles west of the capital, Windhoek, is a good starting point for adventure travelers to book trips to go sand boarding or sand sledding on the dunes.
5. Acadia National Park, Maine
Back in 1604, the explorer Samuel de Champlain sailed down the coast of Maine and spotted a large, rugged island dominated by tall mountains. Today Acadia National Park takes up most of Mount Desert Island and is the oldest national park east of the Mississippi. Travelers come to hike, bike, swim, row, fish and ski. It's probably best to visit in summer, as many of the roads are closed in winter due to heavy snowfall.
Visitors should check out the many spots to do "via ferrata" climbing, using ladders, iron bars and cable attached to the rock to allow climbers a protected route to explore the scenery. You can hike the miles of carriage trails throughout the park, originally commissioned by industrialist John D. Rockefeller.

6. Big Sur, California
The breathtaking views on this part of California's coastline, where the Santa Lucia Mountains drop into the Pacific, have long inspired travelers and artists. Inaccessible by road until 1937, it was one of the state's most remote areas.
There's ample hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing and beach combing, but ocean swimming can be dangerous. Take a dip instead in the Big Sur River, which has many access spots. You can camp among the redwoods at the state parks in the area. Take the hike to Pfeiffer Falls , and if you're fit, try the challenging trail to Sykes Hot Springs . You can also visit the historic Point Sur lighthouse. Big Sur is home to the Esalen Institute , a famous retreat center with its own hot springs and spectacular views.
7. The Swiss Alps
In both summer and winter, the Swiss Alps are an active traveler's dream. The skiing in winter is unparalleled, and in summer there's no better place for hiking and even biking. You can stay in one of the region's famous chalets and explore the region's many highland lakes and meadows.
Be sure to try the sledding, also known as sledging. "You ride on Swiss sleds that take you down several kilometers," Chesak says. You can also visit in the Swiss National Park in Graubünden and the Parc Ela , a 600-square-kilometer protected area.

8. Sedona, Arizona
The red sandstone formations of Sedona have awed many a traveler. Some say the rocks harbor mystic vortexes of energy. Even if you're a skeptic, you'll surely appreciate Sedona's ability to rejuvenate the soul through hiking, camping, mountain biking and yoga.
"Sedona could keep you busy for weeks," says Kathleen Ventura, co-creator of the Our Favorite Adventure website. The town has served as a backdrop for movies dating back to the 1920s. Be sure to check out Devil's Bridge Trail and the petroglyphs in the Coconino National Forest. The town is host to an international film festival as well as music festivals throughout the year, ranging from bluegrass to jazz to classical.
Sparsely populated, Norway remains largely unspoiled, and its natural beauty attracts visitors in the hundreds of thousands each year. Visitors can go hiking, biking, boating, horseback riding and fishing, as well as skiing, sledding and dogsledding. View huge fjords with tall cliff faces that drop right into the ocean.
You can also travel north of the Arctic Circle to the city of Tromso to view the Northern Lights and take a ferry down the country's coast, where you can hop on and off to take part in the outdoor activities each port has to offer. Intrepid winter travelers can visit the famous ski jump at Holmenkollen outside Oslo, site of the 1952 Winter Olympics, which has hosted ski jumping competitions going back to the 1870s.

10. Diamond Highlands, Brazil
Travelers to Brazil often don't realize the massive size of this country, says Chesak. The tropical country is nearly as large as the United States, and offers diverse activities for the adventure traveler. Visit the Chapada Diamantina highlands, named for the region's famous diamond mines, to see beautiful waterfalls, and swim in Poco Azul, a pristine underground cavern pool.
Many travelers have described the area as a giant garden, filled with wild orchids and other plants. Explore the sanctuary of Mucugezinho with its waterfalls, along with the flooded Cave Partinha, and crystal-clear Lake Paratinha. You can also take a hike up the tabletop mountain Morro Pai Inácio. Many of the region's waterfalls run over large, flat rocks that overlap, and visitors can slide down the rocks in their swimsuits, Chesak says.
11. Southern Utah
Southern Utah is home to five spectacular national parks, as well as the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area . Zion National Park 's amazing natural formations are not to be missed, especially the 1,488-foot-tall Angel's Landing , says travel blogger Kathleen Ventura.
From there, it's a few hours by car to Bryce Canyon , Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. All can be explored by hikers, mountain bikers and backpackers or on horseback. You can visit the many holistic retreats for meditation, yoga, pilates and tai chi, says Paul Joseph, co-founder and director of Health and Fitness Travel , a company that designs vacation for active people.
12. Olympic Peninsula, Washington State
With its 73 miles of protected Pacific coastline and old-growth temperate rainforest, the Olympic Peninsula is just a short ferry ride from Seattle. There's fishing, boating, wildlife watching, hiking and camping. Olympic National Park is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve, covering nearly a million acres. Olympic National Forest covers nearly another half-million acres.
You can bike down Highway 112, the Strait of Juan de Fuca Scenic Byway, which follows the breathtaking shoreline between Port Angeles and Sea Stacks. The byway is the most northwest point in the continental United States and is home to old-growth forests, bald eagles, migrating gray whales, puffins and auklets. After a long day traversing the wilderness, savor delicious fresh salmon, or take a soak in the many natural hot spring pools in Olympic National Park.
13. Iceland
The volcanic nation of Iceland is a unique spot to snorkel and scuba dive. "The water is so cold that your face gets numb, but it's just this amazing blue, it almost looks tropical," Chesak says. Iceland is a perfect stopover for travelers going from the United States to Europe.
For a warmer experience, you can visit the famous Blue Lagoon, a hot spring just 25 miles from Reykjavic. It's a common activity during layovers between flights; it's easy to book a quick trip directly from the airport, if you stay longer, you can see the countryside from the back of one of the country's famous and hardy Icelandic ponies.

14. Badlands National Park, South Dakota
The grasslands of the American prairie at Badlands National Park offer a starkly beautiful landscape, with eroded buttes and dry canyons. The northeast part of the park is on U.S. land, while the southwest portion, known as the Stronghold Unit, lies within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and is managed by the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
There are two campgrounds in the park, which is home to a huge number of 23-to-34-million-year-old fossils from the Oligocene Epoch. You can also visit nearby Mount Rushmore and Pipestone National Monument , where Native Americans from many tribes still go to quarry the unique stone to make bowls for their ceremonial pipes.
15. Lakes Region, Chile
The southern lakes region of Chile near Puerto Montt has strong Swiss and German influences and is dotted with quaint restaurants and cafes. Just a few miles north, in Puerto Varas, visitors can go sea kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, trekking, fly fishing and whitewater rafting, says Chesak.
"There's tons of culture, great food and great walkable towns," Chesak says. Definitely stop at Vicente Perez Rosales National Park , the country's oldest, which features sharp-peaked volcanoes, a temperate rainforest and pristine lakes and rivers.

16. Yukon, Canada
With a land mass larger than Germany and Belgium combined, Yukon offers some of the most pristine wilderness for adventure travelers, says Chesak. The capital of Whitehorse is a good spot to set up base before heading out to activities such as glacial whitewater rafting and alpine climbing.
Some visitors take in the vastness by "flightseeing," booking a small plane to fly up to the top of a glacier and go for a hike. The long hours of daylight during the summer also mean more time to enjoy Yukon's natural beauty. Try to visit on June 21, the day of the summer solstice when the sun never sets.
17. Zhangjiajie, China
Have you ever seen those otherworldly landscape paintings from China, featuring perpendicular peaks shrouded in mist? They really do exist. These eerie landforms in southern China's Hunan Province inspired the makers of the movie "Avatar" in designing Pandora. Adventure travelers will enjoy a hike through the sandstone landscapes, such as the Xianren Qiao, the Bridge of the Immortals, a narrow rock bridge over a deep chasm.
Don't miss Huang Shi Zhai, the highest village in the area at 3,450 feet, reachable only by a 3,800-step stairway, and be sure to catch a glimpse of Yupi Feng, the famed grouping of thin spiky columns hundreds of feet tall. After a long hike, a rafting trip down the Mengdong River — described by some travelers as providing the best whitewater rafting in the world — will take you through deep gorges for 100 kilometers.

18. New Zealand
New Zealand is the favorite destination of travel bloggers Kathleen Ventura and Brock Delinski. The island nation has unlimited spectacular coastlines, with high mountains plunging into the surf. The North Island has surfing, snorkeling, diving, boating and swimming, as well as natural forests to explore, says Ventura.
The South Island has some of the most epic national parks and is home to many of the country's Great Walks, or premier tracks that pass through forests, lakes, rivers, mountains and gorges. Be sure to take the Abel Tasman Great Walk for the hiking trails that take you in and out of some of the most beautiful, turquoise water coves and directly down onto the beach, says Delinski. The town of Kaikoura also offers year-round whale watching.
19. Northern India
The Himalayas in Northern India have been a center for traditional healing practices of ayurvedic medicine for centuries, says travel expert Paul Joseph. Numerous spots in cities like Hardiwar and Rishikesh offer visitors the chance to learn yoga or take part in a liquid detox.
You can visit tea plantations and the Tibetan expatriate community, led by the Dalai Lama, in Dharamsala. Visit Corbett National Park on the Ramganga River in the foothills of the Himalayas. India's first national park, it is a protected area for endangered Bengal tigers. Kanha National Park, also a tiger reserve, was the setting for Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book."

20. Angkor Wat, Cambodia
The ruins of the ancient Khmer kingdom are an awe-inspiring place to explore history and hike in the Cambodian jungle. The world's largest religious monument, it was built in the first half of the 12th century. It's an architectural masterpiece filled with intricate columns, squares, roofs and carvings. After Angkor Wat, travel to the nearby ruins of Angkor Thom, the former Khmer capital of Cambodia.
Be sure to view Bayon temple to see thousands of large carved, smiling faces that are said to be images of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom are easily accessible from the city of Siem Reap. You can hike the entire complex or rent bicycles. There is bus service from the capital, Phnom Penh, but a much more pleasant way to get there is by boat, roughly a six-hour trip.
21. Morocco
When you think of Morocco, surfboards may not come to mind, but the coastal city of Agadir is actually a surfer's paradise, says travel expert Paul Joseph, a company that designs vacation for active people. "It's got a very strong surf that's appealing to beginners and experts," Joseph says.
When you're ready to move on to dry land, head to the Atlas Mountains, located inland, for hiking, trekking or even a yoga retreat. Marrakech offers a romantic history, but it can get a bit touristy, says Chesak. Try to get out of the city and soak up the culture at a local kasbah, or lodge, he adds. The settlements of Merzouga and M'Hamid, at the edge of the Sahara, offer trips into the desert by camel or ATV.

Boat under the Iguazú Falls
South America’s Iguazú Falls, located on the border of Brazil and Argentina, make all other waterfalls look like mere trickles in comparison. The system of more than 200 cascades (reaching heights of around 270 feet) can be viewed from surrounding walkways and catwalks, but we’re fans of the more adventurous vantage-point—hopping on an Iguazú Jungle inflatable raft and sailing directly under the exhilarating, high-pressure falls.
Climb to Machu Picchu
No adventurer’s must-visit list is complete without Machu Picchu , the famous Incan citadel located in the Andes. While the site can be accessed via train and bus, more active travelers can take the five-day trek along the entire 26-mile-long Inca Trail. Or, thanks to local tour operator Sam Travel Peru , you can get dropped at kilometer marker 104 and do the whole experience in 24 hours .
Sand surf in the Sahara
The dunes of the Sahara are colossal, untouched, and tailor-made for extreme sports. The desert’s rows of barchans (meaning “crescent-shaped dunes” in Turkic) have ideal shapes for sand surfing (descending the slopes on a surfboard) and sandboarding (descending the slopes on a snowboard)—and those views don’t hurt, either. Stay at Erg Chigaga Luxury Camp in Morocco, which offers sandboarding in addition to other desert activities like camel rides and quad biking.
Heli-hike in British Columbia
With CMH Heli + Skiing , you can helicopter to the steepest and deepest powder in Canada for backcountry skiing. However, come summer , the company’s guides take guests on multi-day hiking trips to terrain otherwise inaccessible, along ridgelines, through alpine meadows, and to stunning viewpoints. While these high-altitude adventures are not for the faint at heart, the accommodations are quite comfortable, with log-hewn lodges complete with full-service restaurants, spa treatments, and a rooftop hot tub to relax in before another day on the trail.

Hot air balloon over Cappadocia
A hot air balloon ride over central Turkey’s Cappadocia region provides 360-degree views of the famous limestone spires and “fairy chimneys”—something you can't get at the ground level. We recommend booking with Kapadokya Balloons , the first company that introduced hot air balloon tourism in Cappadocia. Services include transfers to and from your hotel, snacks, full insurance, and a champagne party after the flight.
Hunt for glaciers in Greenland
Greenland is relatively expensive and tricky to get to, but well worth the effort—especially since it’s one of the most untouched landscapes on the planet. Exhibit A: the hundreds-year-old icebergs and glaciers floating off the mainland, which you can get up close and personal with during a cruise excursion. ( Hurtigruten and Cruise Norway offer these sailings.)
Hop across Botswana on a mobile safari
While most safari camps stay in one place like a traditional hotel, the private canvas safaris by Barclay Stenner Safaris are totally mobile, meaning you can pick up and move locations based on weather conditions and wildlife movements. The outfitter’s Botswana itinerary moves across the country to fauna-rich areas like the Okavango Delta and Makgadikgadi Salt Pans—get ready to follow groups of lions, hippos, elephants, and more.
Paraglide over Turkey’s Blue Lagoon
Oludeniz has one of the most beautiful beaches in Turkey, with pebble shores and a “blue lagoon” of aquamarine hues. The beach also happens to be one of the world's best places to paraglide, thanks to stable weather and gorgeous panoramic views. The launch site for most companies is from Babadağ mountain, with jumping-off points reaching 6,000 feet above sea level.
Explore the Great Barrier Reef
Divers and snorkelers everywhere need to experience the Great Barrier Reef at least once in their lifetime. Not only does the site have more than 400 different types of coral and 1,500 species of fish, but the natural wonder has been rapidly eroding due to coral bleaching and global warming . That means it’s more urgent than ever to see this sight in all its glory—and to understand what we are losing.
Swim through Mexico’s cenotes
Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula features a wealth of unique natural beauty, particularly when it comes to its cavernous cenotes. Floating in one of these natural sinkholes is an incredible experience, as is diving through the underground cave systems . When in Tulum , visit Dos Ojos (“Two Eyes”) to view one of the planet’s most beautiful underwater sites or Gran Cenote for rock formations that resemble Gothic architecture.
Free-fall over Dubai at 120 miles per hour
Dubai is one of the most over-the-top cities in the world, so are you really surprised that skydiving is one of its most popular activities? Skydive Dubai is a company located near Jumeirah Beach, offering tandem skydiving for beginners and solo jumps for licensed divers. If you thought Dubai’s skyline was impressive already, just wait until you see it while falling from 13,000 feet in the air.
Scale Half Dome at Yosemite National Park
The Half Dome trail through Yosemite may be one of the most intense hikes you’ll ever take, stretching for 16 miles and ascending more than 5,500 feet. The final 400 feet are the trickiest—hikers must climb up the steep slope with two steel cables as their only support—but the breathtaking views from the top make the effort (and terror) worth it. Afterwards, stay at The Ahwahnee, one of the most beautiful national park hotels in the country.
Swim with great white sharks in South Africa
The fishing town of Gansbaai is often considered to be the birthplace of great white shark cage diving, an activity that would make most adrenaline junkies drool. Cage diving is totally safe (despite what some low-budget shark movies might lead you to believe), but we dare you to keep your heart rate in check as you come face-to-face with an apex predator. Marine Dynamics is one of the most popular cage diving operators in town, with a marine biologist and videographer joining every tour.
Bungee jump in New Zealand
New Zealand practically invented adventure sports when the Kawarau Bridge Bungy opened in 1988. Here you join around 38,000 annual visitors to take the 140-foot jump from the South Island's historic, steel-framed Kawarau Bridge—an activity in which the views are almost as thrilling as the fall itself.
Climb Mount Fuji
Solitary Mount Fuji is probably Japan’s most iconic natural wonder , rising 12,388 feet above villages and reflecting on lakes’ surfaces. You can get views of the landmark from many places, like Lake Kawaguchi in Fujikawaguchiko and even the Park Hyatt Tokyo , but it’s the views from the mountain that will give you the most bragging rights. Visit from early July to mid-September to take advantage of the official climbing season, when the designated trails and paved roads are free of snow.
Go volcano boarding on Cerro Negro in Nicaragua
If you’re looking for action sports and adventure, we recommend booking a flight to Nicaragua right now. There you can kayak, surf, zipline through the jungle, and even sled down the side of an active volcano. Intrepid travelers love to climb up the 2,388-foot Cerro Negro and then “volcano board” back down (an activity where you sit or stand on a piece of plywood and slide your way down the slopes). You'll want to go with a guided group tour with this one. Bigfoot Hostels is one of many operators for excursions—for $25, you get transportation to the volcano, boards, safety equipment, snacks, and your speed clocked by a radar gun.
Take a white-knuckle drive in Norway
Who says your adrenaline can’t pump from the comfort of your car? Trollstigen is one of the world’s most popular (and terrifying ) highways, known for its steep gradient and hairpin turns. The one-lane road passes such impressive wonders as the 1,050-foot Stigfossen waterfall, but be sure to pull over before you gawk and snap photos. There are several viewing platforms along the road that will let you take in the sites without risking a crash.
Dive Belize’s Great Blue Hole
Known for its circular shape and strikingly deep blue color , the Great Blue Hole is a 1,000-foot-wide sinkhole in the middle of Belize’s Lighthouse Reef. While an aerial shot is enough to convince anyone of its beauty, scuba divers are the ones who get to experience the wonders that lie beneath: massive, 40-foot limestone stalactites and stalagmites that formed during the last glacial period.
Go canyoning in the Azores
Portugal’s Azores Islands are equal parts adventurous and beautiful, inviting travelers to get up close and personal with nature while hiking, biking, and swimming. If you want to really push the envelope, try canyoning—an activity that has you rappel down a waterfall while navigating slippery rocks and fast-flowing water. Azores Getaways offers a comprehensive and easy-to-book experience. Training, equipment, on-site instructors, and snacks are all included in the excursion, which will no doubt become one of the most memorable of your life.
Kayak through Torres del Paine National Park
Chile’s Patagonia region is one of the most beautiful spots on the planet, and there are plenty of ways to explore the area. But while most people experience the sights while hiking, you can get a slightly different view from the water via a kayaking trip. Kayak en Patagonia offers several tour options ranging in duration and difficulty levels, but all let you paddle past towering mountains, rugged glaciers, and other incredible vistas.
Sleep under the northern lights
Ah, the elusive northern lights . So many factors are at play when it comes to seeing the technicolor phenomenon—location, time of year, weather conditions—but it’s hard to lose with an excursion to Finnish Lapland. The Arctic area is one of the planet’s best for aurora viewing, especially if you get to sleep in an igloo hotel at Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort or mobile Aurora Bubble Sled . Up your viewing chances by planning a trip between December and March.
Go heli-skiing in Alaska
If you’re a seasoned traveler who’s conquered every black diamond slope in North America, there’s still one snowy adventure left to vanquish: heli-skiing. There’s nothing quite like hopping in a helicopter and being dropped onto untouched snow at the top of a mountain—especially in a setting as formidable as Alaska’s Chugach Mountains. The experienced guides at Valdez Heli Ski Guides (VHSG) will help make this dream a reality, taking you to some of the best runs of your life and then letting you unwind (hot tub and massages included) at the cozy Tsaina Lodge .
Snorkel between continents in Iceland
Iceland is one of the best countries in the world for adventure travel , with opportunities for everything from glacier hiking to snorkeling and diving. For the latter, head straight to Thingvellir National Park along the country’s Golden Circle route , where two tectonic plates slowly pull apart at the rate of about two centimeters (0.8 inches) per year. The phenomenon results in the Silfra fissure, a stunning rift valley where travelers can snorkel or dive in impossibly clear (and cold) waters. Tour company DIVE.IS offers tours for divers and every level of snorkeler—including those with no prior experience—and will snap an underwater photo of you touching two continents at the same time.
Float along the Amazon
Some remote destinations are best seen from the deck of a boat, and that includes the upper Amazon River. Aqua Expeditions ’ luxury cruises through the Peruvian stretch of the river tour the area’s wildlife and culture at a delightful, leisurely pace. You'll even have chef-prepared gourmet meals and five-star suites with floor-to-ceiling windows. Looking for something a little less luxe? Amazon Adventures offers kayaking trips along some Amazon tributaries, where you can fish for piranhas and camp out in the rainforest.
Surf ‘The Pipeline’ in Oahu
Oahu’s Banzai Pipeline (commonly referred to as The Pipeline) is easily one of the most sought-after surfing spots in the world. Located off the coast of the island’s north shore in Ehukai Beach Park, the surf reef break averages waves measuring nine feet high. This activity is definitely not for beginners, but even non-surfers will get a thrill out of watching the many surf competitions that take place at The Pipeline—all from the safety of a sunny beach.
Spot elusive wildlife in the Great Bear Rainforest
Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest is the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world—and one of the most magical, with elusive species like sea wolves and Kermode bears roaming its 21 million acres. Outer Shores Expeditions will take you on a nine-day excursion aboard a schooner, departing from British Columbia’s First Nations community of Bella Bella and stopping for sea kayaking along the way.
Soak in the planet’s most extreme infinity pool
Located on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, Victoria Falls attracts thousands of tourists each year. One of the biggest draws here is the Devil’s Pool , a naturally formed eddy sitting at the very edge of the falls, where daring swimmers can splash around between August and January (depending on water levels, that is). Given that a slippery rock barrier is the only thing separating you from going over the edge, this site is easily the planet’s most extreme infinity pool .
Camp in Antarctica
Antarctica is truly the final frontier when it comes to adventure travel, providing untouched landscapes, unique wildlife, and more activities than you’ll know what to do with (like cruising, caving, and thermal spring soaking , to name a few). If you can get yourself to Punta Arenas, Chile, Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions will fly you to Antarctica for three days of skiing and hiking before setting you up for a South Pole sleepover.

Have you visited Loreto Bay National Marine Park in Mexico? The beautiful Pacific Coast body of water that shimmers 50 shades of blue is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Swimming with Stingrays in Moorea
Swimming with stingrays is our favorite South Pacific cruise excursion. Period. This water adventure is doable for most baby boomers. If you can climb the ladder […]
Fishing in the Florida Keys: A Boomer Woman’s First Catch
Fishing in the Florida Keys? This travel princess? Those were my thoughts when I learned a Florida Keys press visit would include a half-day fishing charter with Captain Skip Bradeen on the Blue Chip Too. When our group of travel writers arrived at Whale Harbor Marina in Islamorada, my misconceptions about offshore fishing were about […]
Snorkeling at Moon Reef on a private excursion in Fiji
“We’ve booked a private cruise excursion to go snorkeling at Moon Reef when we dock in Suva, Fiji. There’s room in the minivan for two more. Would you like to go with us?” asked Randy, one of our new cruising friends on Seabourn Odyssey. Of course Alan and I said yes to an active boomer […]
Kayaking down Flordia’s Ichetucknee River

Fly fishing in Montana on the Missouri River
Blame it on A River Runs Through It, the movie (and novella by Norman Maclean) that romanticized fly fishing in Montana. Or at least that’s the way this boomer traveler sees it. Fun in the Air: Helicopter Adventure Over West Maui and Molokai
Although Alan and I are big advocates of boots on the ground adventures to truly know a destination, there is also something special about seeing it from a seat in a small aircraft or helicopter. Take the Hawaiian Islands, for instance. Steep sea cliffs with thundering waterfalls are no match for our boomer hiking skills. That’s why, when […]

8 Active Travel Ideas for Next Summer!
Updated: Oct 18, 2021
“The traveler was active; he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience. The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes ‘sight-seeing’.”
~Daniel J. Boorstin
There are several ways and reasons to travel, and active traveling is one of the best. Active traveling is one that is becoming more popular and is different from conventional Adventure travel. The benefits are numerous; from the feeling of accomplishment to the health benefits involved. Confused about what trip to take next summer? Don’t think twice. Active travel it is!
Some active travel ideas are explained below.
Walking and Hiking trips
Immerse yourself in a place while walking or hiking and set your pace on several types of road. You can go through the doorways to look at secret courtyards or stop to admire a tropical flower. With this type of trip, you get to appreciate every detail of your destination, and it is more fun.
Biking Trips
The exciting thing about biking trips is the joy of exploring under your power. You can travel through several landscapes and still feel present in a place. Oh! The pure exhilaration you feel when you go biking. So, experience the total immersion of exploring on a bicycle either on your own, with friends, or with fellow cyclers. Did you know that many river cruise ships keep bicycles on board for passengers to ride while onshore?
Multi-Adventure Tour
Experience the best of both worlds, and mix fun activities like walking, biking with other adventures — land, snow, or sea. You can also discover the diversity of a place by relating with all its riches from moving from one adventure to another. There are so many options worldwide! Another activity -- horseback riding!
Active Culinary Adventures
This is exciting news for food lovers. You get to visit cities and take cooking classes, market visits, tastings, and farm tours. This allows you to experience the rich culture of a region through food. Hiking, biking, and yoga are just a few of the activities that can be added to a culinary adventure.
River and Ocean Cruise
Set sail and discover great rivers around the world while stopping at several spots to experience the region. It is relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable because you enjoy the ever-changing scenery along different waterway banks. Most cruises include yoga and fitness classes, as well as walking paths onboard.
Snow Adventure/Polar Region
Who says you cannot enjoy the snow during summer? Visiting the Antarctic or Arctic will remind you of a winter wonderland. You can explore the city by snowshoeing, dogsledding, and there is also wildlife spotting. Sounds heavenly to me!
Wildlife safaris are becoming more popular. This experience is an active one. You can indulge in luxury camps with great food while sighting animals in a four-wheel-drive vehicle. At some point during the trip, you’d be required to walk and have one-on-one contact with the animals. A trip to the Safari is top on most people’s bucket lists, including mine. Is it on yours?
Wellness Travel/Fitness Resorts
This is dedicated entirely to working out and being fit. There are several types of activities like stationary cycling, aerobics, Pilates, cardio-boxing, yoga, strength training, and so on. Outdoor activities such as hiking are also included in eating healthy food throughout your stay so you get to have fun while keeping fit. Let's not forget ski chalets, as well...

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.
What's next on your travel list? With so many places worth traveling to, it can be hard to narrow down your top spots to visit.
Sometimes, it's the famous attractions, delicious food, and stunning hotels that draw us to a certain destination, and other times, it's the bragging rights that come with checking off every continent, country, or state. Whatever your motivation, we've rounded up 21 incredible trips, complete with once-in-a-lifetime experiences and iconic sights you won't find anywhere else in the world.
So, what makes a trip truly life-changing? That answer varies from traveler to traveler, but one thing is for sure: From African safaris to classic road trips, this list will make you want to plan your next great adventure.
Deciding between the historic cities of Rome, Venice, Naples, and Florence for the top destination to visit feels impossible, so the entire country of Italy deserves a spot on your list. Start in the Eternal City and head north through the rolling hills of Tuscany to visit Florence, followed by Milan or Venice, or go south to the beaches of the beautiful Amalfi Coast and Sicily.
New York, New York
Visiting the Statue of Liberty , standing at the top of the Empire State Building, walking across the Brooklyn Bridge: These are just a few of the things you can only do in New York City. Whether you dream of visiting all the places you've seen on screen, catching a Broadway show, or eating your way through the city's diverse neighborhoods, there's no doubt that NYC deserves a spot on your list.
Tokyo, Japan
Old and new come together in Japan's bustling capital city. Historic temples and shrines, busy shopping districts, delicious food, and some of the world's best theme parks and attractions — whatever your interests, there's something for you in Tokyo.
Paris, France
From watching the Eiffel Tower sparkle and viewing famous works of art at world-renowned museums to eating delicious French pastries, there are innumerable reasons that Paris deserves a spot on your list. Of course, other dreamy French destinations like Mont-Saint-Michel, Chamonix, and the Riviera are well worth a visit, too.
Busy medinas, intricate architecture, and a unique combination of cultural influences make Morocco unlike anywhere else on the planet. Whether you're traveling to bustling Marrakesh, pretty coastal cities, or remote desert towns (or hopefully, all three), a trip to Morocco is bound to be one to remember.
Monica Farber/Travel + Leisure
From the whitewashed homes of Santorini to the Ios party scene to the relaxing atmosphere of Milos, there's a perfect Greek Island for every type of traveler. Island hopping gives you the chance to experience more of what the country has to offer, but plan to spend a couple of days in Athens at the beginning and/or end of your trip.

Machu Picchu
Seeing the historic ruins of the Incan Empire set among the breathtaking Andes at Machu Picchu is an undeniably life-changing experience. The stunning citadel ruins of Machu Picchu are worth the journey — and for some travelers, that trip, often taken by train or on foot as a multi-day trek , is a big part of the experience. Editor’s note: Machu Picchu is currently closed due to civil unrest in Peru. Visit the official website for the latest news and reopening details.
African Safari
Seeing majestic animals like lions, elephants, and rhinos in the wild is a dream best accomplished with an African safari . South Africa, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Kenya are among the most popular safari destinations — and in each of those countries, you'll find incredible lodges and tour operators who can help you spot these creatures in their natural habitat.
Whether you dream of cruising down the famed Nile River, seeing the Pyramids of Giza, or visiting the ancient Valley of the Kings, Egypt's historic wonders make the destination completely unique (and worthy of a spot on your travel list).
Unlike many of the action-packed trips on this list, the Maldives is synonymous with relaxation, luxury, and romance. A stay in an overwater bungalow set atop turquoise blue waters is the ultimate getaway that's worth the long-haul flight and oftentimes pricey accommodations.
Antarctica Cruise
Hoping to visit all seven continents? Cross Antarctica off your list with a cruise. Several major cruise lines have journeys to Antarctica, offering incredible views of the ice and wildlife from the comfort and safety of a ship. Travelers typically fly in and out of Buenos Aires en route to Ushuaia (where most cruises depart from); we recommend spending a few days in the fascinating Argentine city before your expedition.
Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure
Dubbed one of the natural wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef is a can't-miss for many wildlife lovers. Of course, Australia's gorgeous coastline, the iconic Sydney Opera House, and fuzzy creatures like kangaroos and koalas are also reasons to head to the destination. Fly into Sydney and spend a few days there before heading out to explore more of this expansive country teeming with natural beauty.
Galapagos Islands
Incredible and diverse plant and animal species make the Galapagos Islands another must-visit for nature-loving travelers. This stunning archipelago off the coast of Ecuador is best explored by cruise, so you can take in as many breathtaking landscapes and animals as possible during your trip.
Like the other countries on this list, India has countless destinations worth exploring, but one of the most famous attractions that travelers dream of seeing for themselves is the Taj Mahal. This 17th-century white marble mausoleum has drawn visitors to Agra for years. Luxury travelers might consider a train trip aboard the Maharajas' Express (with a stop at the Taj Mahal) as the ultimate experience. Travelers planning to visit the Taj Mahal or take the luxurious train ride will want to fly into Delhi, India's capital territory.
Petra, Jordan
The stunning ancient city of Petra is made up of several impressive structures carved into sandstone rock faces, including the famous Al-Khazneh. The city dates back thousands of years, making this UNESCO World Heritage site a must-visit for history buffs.
Passing through India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Bhutan, and Nepal, the Himalayas are home to some of the world's highest peaks — and that means breathtaking mountain views, too. For adventurous and active travelers, climbing Mount Everest (or at least trekking to Everest Base Camp) is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
American National Park Road Trip
The classic American road trip is a mainstay on many travelers' lists — and for good reason. The country's incredible national parks , including Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Yosemite, are best explored on road trips with stops at charming small towns and kitschy roadside attractions.
Great Wall of China
Stretching across China for thousands of miles, with sections dating back nearly 2,000 years, the Great Wall is regarded as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Visitors can hike along parts of the wall — some areas are located within driving distance of Beijing, so it's a perfect day trip from the city.
Easter Island
The hundreds of monolithic moai statues have drawn curious visitors to Easter Island for years. This remote Polynesian island is worth the lengthy trip for travelers hoping to see these impressive human figures, while also soaking in some incredible coastal views.
Northern Lights Trip
Catching a glimpse of the elusive northern lights is possible in several destinations close to the Arctic Circle, including Alaska, Iceland, Canada, Greenland, Finland, Sweden, and Norway. All of these places have incredible viewpoints (and even hotels where you can see the phenomenon from your bed ), in addition to great, wintry scenery. (The lights are best viewed from late fall through early spring.)
Thailand and Vietnam
A trip through Southeast Asia is a must for any traveler, especially foodies who love street eats. While you could spend weeks in each of these countries, Thailand and Vietnam can easily be paired for an exciting trip packed with lush scenery, cultural experiences, and delicious food. Have a little extra time to spare? Add Cambodia to the mix and include a visit to expansive Angkor Wat.
Not all seniors are into cruises and bus tours: Here are 5 active trip ideas for 50+ travelers
The internet offers a bewildering array of senior travel tours and ideas for older travelers. Many of us have the time and resources for serious travel and we’re aware of the health benefits of physical activity. But we are also a diverse group, so not all of the senior adventures that pop up on the web or in brochures will be relevant to all of us.
For one thing, the senior age range (50 and older) is wider than that of any other group. We bring to the table a variety of life experiences and physical capabilities. A friend my age (74) spent last summer vacation doing her “usual activities”: cycling, canoeing and backpacking. I prefer to take long walks to get to know a destination. Other seniors use their vacations to visit the best dude ranches or luxury glamping resorts or simply take advantage of AARP travel discounts at nice hotels .
DISNEY MAGIC: How to plan a multigenerational Disney World vacation that keeps everyone happy
Some active seniors may not want to go full-speed on every day of a trip. Some may have health or mobility issues, or be traveling with someone who does. We may wish to travel with people who have very different interests and physical capabilities – a skip-gen vacation with our grandchildren, for example. And while some seniors have very specific bucket lists, many simply want to go somewhere, do something and stay healthy.
Here are five different types of trips for active seniors that take into account a variety of travel styles and interests.

1. National parks and state parks
In recent years, many older travelers have opted to “roam near home,” choosing senior adventures that offer active pursuits but don’t require long plane trips. The 63 U.S. national parks are superb travel destinations for seniors to pursue biking, birding, water sports, climbing, diving, fishing, hiking and wilderness backpacking, horseback riding, water sports and winter sports. Breathtaking scenery can also be found at Canada's national parks .
LODGE LIFE: 12 best national park lodges in the U.S.
State parks are generally less crowded and can be equally rewarding for senior adventures. Several national parks could fit inside the 6 million acres of Adirondack State Park in New York. Beautiful Letchworth State Park and Franconia Notch draw visitors from all over the world. Hikers, cyclists and riders can enjoy hoodoo rock formations at Texas' Palo Duro Canyon and seasonal wildflowers in California's Anza-Borrego Desert .
PICKED UP AN OUTDOOR PURSUIT DURING COVID? Take it to the next level with an active vacation
2. Walking, hiking and cycling tours for active seniors
Many tour companies offer walking and cycling adventures that allow active seniors to combine outdoor and urban experiences. European tours are especially well designed for taking walkers and cyclists into beautiful towns and countryside on a single trip. Country Walkers and VBT Bicycling Vacations offer both U.S. and international tours with guided and self-guided options and they provide all the support you’ll need.
TRAVEL TOGETHER: 7 best family resorts for multigenerational vacations
Most tour companies specify a trip’s activity level and many will tell you approximately how many miles you’ll cover each day on foot or bike. Active travel specialist Backroads also categorizes its tours according to traveler type; while it does not list a “50 and older” group, active seniors who enjoy traveling with family or a variety of age groups may fit under “family” or “20 and older.” And a new division of Backroads, Dolce Tempo , offers several levels of “easygoing” excursions.
Tours marketed specifically as senior adventures are no less exciting than others. Eldertreks includes destinations as varied as the Silk Road, southern Africa and Madagascar in its offerings. Its five activity levels are geared to seniors. Senior Cycling focuses on the eastern U.S. and Canada. And Road Scholar has an impressive list of walking and hiking trips and a few cycling trips that include kayak and barge journeys.
LIFE ON THE ROAD: 10 best RV road trip vacations for families
3. River cruises for seniors
River cruises combine the opportunity to experience different places with the chance to easily disembark at ports offering walking, cycling and other sightseeing options. Travelers are assigned cabins for the trip’s duration and may choose not to disembark at a given stop. This makes river travel ideal for the active senior with a less active travel partner or partners.
In Europe, riverboats from many companies sail the Rhine, Danube, Douro, Seine and Volga. Walking tours and just plain wandering are available at nearly every stop and many companies now make free bikes available for independent touring. Some offer guided excursions at ports where cycling is especially good.
SET SAIL: 7 best cruise lines for couples (and their most romantic voyages)
Viking River Cruises provides a bicycle tour of the Kinderdijk windmills as part of an Amsterdam-to-Antwerp voyage. Avalon Waterways passengers may choose an excursion in Austria’s Wachau Valley and its active Discovery River Cruises sail the Ganges, Mekong, Nile and Peruvian Amazon as well as the European rivers. Uniworld has a Budapest-to-Passau voyage where cyclists can ride one-way on several stretches. AmaWaterways features a wellness program on each of its ships and offers cycling tours of many ports, as well as some hiking options.
4. Extended stays
Like river cruises, extended stays in a single destination allow seniors with differing activity levels to enjoy a vacation together. Resorts make it possible for some guests to stay on the beach or by the pool while others take the bus into town or arrange for tours and other activities. Seniors who love all aspects of planning can use vacation rental booking sites like Vrbo or Airbnb to investigate and schedule their own outings.
WHERE TO GO: 20 best family vacation spots in the U.S.
The educational travel company Smithsonian Journeys takes a different approach with its cultural stays. One-week visits in places such as Barcelona, Krakow and Italy’s Lake District come with itineraries that allow seniors to be as active as they wish in exploring the neighborhood and region. Three-week “Living-in” stays in Andalusia, Florence and Aix-en-Provence place travelers in apartment-hotels and offer interest-based threads that include cooking, language instruction and hiking.
5. Skip-gen vacations
Skip-gen travel is an emerging trend where grandparents and grandkids vacation together while skipping the generation in between. Children help keep seniors active, though it can be challenging to find activities that the both generations can happily share.
GORGEOUS GETAWAYS: 7 stunning overwater bungalows worth the splurge
Road Scholar, a pioneer in this area, offers some 150 different multigenerational and skip-gen “learning adventures” throughout the world. Tauck offers “kid-tested on-tour adventures” like zip lining in Costa Rica and jet boating in Alaska with its Tauck Bridges program. Small group guided tour company Intrepid Travel designates certain tours for families only. Like Backroads, Intrepid offers many active travel choices but does not specifically address seniors; some trips may require especially fit grandparents.

Fit, fitter, sports holiday – exciting travel destinations worldwide
Basically, you can go on an active holiday in almost every country in the world. However, in some holiday regions this works better than in others. Because they have either specialized in sports trips and action holidays or are simply naturally equipped with attractive action infrastructure such as rushing rivers and gorges for whitewater tours and bare rocky slopes for climbing. Such landscapes are simply predestined for a sports holiday.
1. Austria: Active vacation in the Alps
One of the best travel destinations for active holidays is our small neighboring country Austria. Impressive mountain backdrops, valleys and gorges as well as a wide, flat plain in the east make the country not only an attractive destination for skiers, but also for cyclists, mountaineers, hikers, climbers, mountain bikers and white water rafting fans.
The idyllic mountain landscapes and often untouched nature ensure that the country is simply attractive for athletes and active people. Austria is also a famous travel destination for divers. You can dive as a scuba diver in numerous crystal-clear lakes such as the Attersee or the Grüner See.
2. Sports holiday in Germany: short journey, great fun factor
You can also spend a wonderful sports holiday in your local area. On the one hand, the Baltic Sea coast and North Sea coast are perfect for water sports and offer you many options from jet skiing, sailing, stand-up paddling to windsurfing and surfing. An active holiday by the sea is the perfect opportunity to combine the trip with a beach holiday or with one of the great wellness hotels directly on the beach. Germany offers attractive landscapes all over the country to enjoy a sports holiday in your local area. In the low mountain ranges and in the Harz Mountains you can enjoy wonderful mountain biking, hiking, skiing in winter and a variety of other outdoor activities.
The situation is similar in the south and in the west. Extensive, natural forests and partly sparsely populated landscapes enable athletes to really let off steam with cycling, jogging, horse riding and many other outdoor sports. Two other factors make Germany particularly attractive for active vacationers: Firstly, you can easily travel by car. And on the other hand, there are numerous attractive, high-quality wellness hotels in this country that offer you the necessary infrastructure that you need for a perfect sports trip.
3. Romania: Active holiday between the Carpathians and the Black Sea
For travelers with a slightly lower budget, an active holiday in Romania is an exciting alternative. The country in Eastern Europe has incredibly beautiful, untouched natural landscapes, offers you an attractive selection of hotels and, of course, you can also take this opportunity to experience the gruesome story of Count Dracula while exploring Transylvania by bike. Romania is currently one of the insider tip travel destinations in Europe. Anyone looking for an up-and-coming and affordable destination for their active trip is in good hands in Romania.
4. Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria: Active holidays in the Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are definitely one of the best travel destinations for active vacationers. The diverse islands off the African coast, with their year-round mild climate and often stable weather, are ideal for long bike rides on the mountain, hiking between volcanic landscapes, swimming in the Atlantic, diving with 1000 meters of fishing or stand-up paddling. Tenerife (travel report), Lanzarote (travel report) and Gran Canaria (travel report) also have an excellent tourist infrastructure with many great and increasingly high-class hotels that offer the optimal starting point for your excursions and tours.
5. Active vacation in Thailand: come to adventure land
If you are well trained and have a stable circulation, you can also spend your active vacation in tropical climes. Because in Thailand you often have high temperatures with high humidity - this is not for the faint of heart. An active holiday in Thailand combines the paradisiacal beaches, the untamed nature of the jungle and lots of outdoor sports. Of course you can do diving, snorkeling, surfing, stand up paddling, and all the sports that are popular in the water. You can also hike in the jungle, go kayaking in the nature park and just relax and enjoy time on the dream beach or hotel pool.
6. Florida: Sports vacation par excellence
For endurance athletes, Florida is a hit. At least in the slightly cooler and drier winter months, you can go jogging on the promenade on Miami Beach and explore several kilometers of beaches on foot. Jogging and exercising on the beach wasn't a thing in the 80s, it's still very popular today in Miami and the other dream beaches in the Sunshine State. Of course, you can also try out one of the 1000 other fun sports in Florida, such as Quidditch. Or you can go diving in the Florida Keys. Basically, the entire state is a big adventure playground in which you can really let off steam as an active vacationer in Florida.
Active holiday tips – this is how it gets particularly intense
If you want to make your active holiday a very special experience, you can adjust a few things. If you plan well in advance, are open to new things and can take a deep breath, you will have a very exciting new travel experience. What does that mean specifically?
1. Make a plan before the trip
Anyone who only plans their activities on site is wasting valuable time. So plan at home what you want to do later on your active holiday. Research providers where you can practice the sports you want and, if necessary, rent equipment from. Prepare as much as possible at home as this will save you valuable time during your trip.
2. Try new sports
You love cycling, jogging and go skiing in winter. All of these are great sports that you can do particularly well on vacation because you finally have time for it. But why not try something new? Grab a surfboard on the beach and try surfing - it's super tiring at first, but with a little practice you'll quickly get the hang of it. Or take a diving course, because learning to dive is not difficult and the underwater world is incredibly breathtaking and fascinating. A skydive or a white water tour can also add a lot of action to your vacation - and get your circulation going.
3. Combines multiple sports or travel themes
Some people are big fans of always doing the same thing. You ride a racing bike for a week on vacation, stand on your stand-up paddling board every day or go jogging at seven in the morning. If you really want to get more out of your active holiday, you should simply add a bit of variety and combine several sports that you really enjoy. For example, I love combining stand up paddling, jogging and diving on vacation. If I have the opportunity, I also include surfing in the program. In the future, the list could even be expanded – namely to include riding electric scooters “e-scooters”.
4. Test new equipment on the trip
If you practice a certain sport that requires a lot of equipment, you can try it out on vacation. This has two advantages: On the one hand, you finally have time to spend on the new sports equipment. On the other hand, it's just a lot of fun and brings new impetus to the sport you practice if you buy a little new equipment and suitable travel gadgets. You can make your active trip even more exciting by doing some shopping before your vacation.
5. Give yourself time out
Some people always have to overdo it. I remember this myself from a few trips: out of bed at six in the morning, four to five dives throughout the day and in the evening we were back home at 22 p.m. and fell into bed completely exhausted. The next day the same program started. On the flight back we thought to ourselves: a week's vacation would be nice. Today I say: stop, stop! Take time out during your active holiday and treat yourself to a few breaks in between.
This doesn't just have one or two advantages, but several: On the one hand, the vacation really has a relaxing factor. On the other hand, during the rest periods you can review what you have experienced and have a much more intense memory of the details of your tour after the trip than if you rush through your vacation with tunnel vision and don't allow yourself a break.
Early booking or last minute? So you can book active holidays cheap
In order to be able to book your active holiday cheaply, you have three options: Firstly, you should do good research and think about which travel destination seems suitable to you. On the other hand, if possible, you should choose a cheap travel destination where the cost of living and flight prices are low - and the hotels are also of a high standard with low costs. That's half the battle when it comes to being able to book your active holiday cheaply.
As soon as you have picked out the key details, you should secure your trip as an early bird. Tour operators often give discounts for everyone who books their vacation particularly early. This has the advantage for the organizers that they have greater planning security. Another option for a particularly cheap action trip is to book the holiday Very Last Minute - that is, really at the last minute. If you are flexible in terms of time and region, you can save up to 70 percent of the travel price if you book two to five days before departure.
Action trips: lots of things going on on vacation
Active vacation is a relative term. For some, just strolling through the center of the holiday destination is an activity on holiday. For the adrenaline junkies among active vacationers, however, it has to be a real action trip. Skydiving, bungee jumping from a 100 meter high bridge, white water rafting with rapids and climbing on bare rock faces are definitely part of your repertoire - and you won't be satisfied until your adrenaline levels shoot up. Can be done, does not have to be.
This is how active holidays become an experience
My conclusion
An active holiday is such an exciting holiday experience because it really catapults you out of everyday life. If you think that you can only really relax and unwind on a beach vacation or wellness vacation, you may be wrong. Because if you lie around on the beach all day, you first have to try to let go of work and stress at home and really switch off. On the other hand, those who experience a lot on an active holiday are virtually catapulted out of everyday life. Within two days, the stress at work is completely forgotten because you are simply distracted by it.
The best way is to combine an active holiday or sports trip with wellness, beach and relaxation as well as good food and some culture. If you add variety to your trip, you will simply experience more in the end. Going for a jog or riding a bike every day ends up being monotonous. Experienced holidaymakers therefore skilfully combine different experiences and get the most out of their active holiday.
Do you regularly go on active holidays or are you currently planning your first trip? Which travel destinations and sports can you recommend? What tips do you have? Share your experiences in the comments.
I also think that you can enjoy a holiday all year round because there are always countries where it is warm at the moment. My brother and I would like to book an active holiday. Hopefully we can quickly agree on the hotel.
Of course, you will quickly agree that there are so many great travel destinations for active holidays for every season! 🙂

When lockdowns started in March 2020, Steve Schneiter lost all his revenue. Schneiter is the owner of Denver Microbrew Tour, a company that gives guided brewery tours. Considering both travel and indoor dining was at a standstill, Schneiter had few avenues to maintain his business.
To stay occupied, he set a goal to run one mile every day throughout lockdown, which he expected to last eight weeks. But as lockdowns persisted, Schneiter — who hadn’t run more than a half marathon pre-pandemic — organized a socially distant relay race where up to 10 people split a 50-kilometer run.
By November, Schneiter was itching to escape Colorado, so he planned a road trip to Moab, Utah — chosen in part for another race. This course was also 50 kilometers, but the difference here was rather than split it among friends, he’d run it all himself.
From there, active vacations became his new, pandemic-fueled modus operandi. He’s since done multiple running vacations, including a trip where his wife drove their converted 1996 Bluebird Bus to a different campsite every night and he’d run to meet her.

The rise in active vacations
Schneiter might be unique in finding a 50-kilometer run relaxing, but his newfound preference for active vacations is far from singular. After more than a year stuck at home and (for some) gaining the “COVID-15” pounds, travel companies have witnessed increased interest in active vacations.
These trips shed the typical stops at museums and theaters, instead embracing physical activity while simultaneously avoiding large crowds. There are active vacations for nearly any sport and activity level. You might hike a mountain range, scuba dive off the coast of a remote island or bike through vineyards and farmland.
Some travelers organize their own active trips — planning their own hikes, bike rental stops and lodging — as Schneiter did. Others might travel through a tour company that handles renting sports equipment, planning meals and booking hotels for you.
Despite the fact that overall rates of travel are still far below pre-pandemic levels, many tour companies marketing active trips are seeing huge interest.
Country Walkers, a company that offers both self-guided and group hiking tours throughout the U.S. and abroad, told NerdWallet that bookings for its South America itineraries, which include a trek to Machu Picchu, have increased 170% compared with 2019.
“We hear feedback from guests that they’re excited to be out biking or hiking and not spending time in museums or other crowded places right now,” says Laura Breen, who leads sales for Country Walkers and its sibling brand, VBT Bicycling Vacations. “Some guests are doing two trips or even three trips to make up for lost time in 2020.”

An increasing focus on U.S. travel
Active vacations have long lured U.S. travelers who want to test their skills trekking or cycling in places like Everest Base Camp or Vietnam’s Hải Vân Pass — a highlight of the six-day bike tour offered by cycling company Spiceroads.
Yet even in 2022, some ongoing border restrictions and still-strict COVID-19-related rules in foreign countries, mean that many travelers are still opting to stay in the U.S.
Tour companies have shifted their itineraries to be in line with customer preferences. REI Co-op, which has run guided backpacking, cycling and camping tours around the world, discontinued its international trips to invest in domestic travel.
And the strategy is paying off. According to REI, it now runs more than 100 itineraries across the U.S., and as of March, sales of its domestic trips were up 28% compared with 2019.
What do active vacations cost?
The trouble with staying domestic: often significantly higher costs. Thailand-based Spiceroads offers tours primarily in Southeast Asia that start at less than $100 for a two-day trip. Its seven-day trip along Vietnam’s coast costs $1,400 including lodging, a rental bike and a support vehicle.
Contrast that with the domestic trips: California-based Backroads offers similar cycling trips as Spiceroads, but at a premium price tag. Its $4,000, five-day bike tour of Nantucket Island will lead you to the outdoor heated pool in front of your private cabana at the luxury White Elephant resort.
But of course, even prices vary widely depending on whether you prefer luxury or you don't mind more humble accommodations — as well as if you're seeking a multi-day long curated vacation, you want an activity that simply lasts the day, or you just want to do some sort of sport or adventure activity for a couple hours.
If you like luxury: Many of the fanciest trips emphasize food, too — after all, you've burned those calories. Cycling tour company DuVine carved a niche in trips through vineyards. Naturally, it includes gourmet meals paired with local wines, such as a $6,600, 5-day trip through California’s wine country with two Michelin-star dinners.
Photo courtesy of Santa Barbara Adventure Co.
If you don't want to fork over many hundreds of dollars: You might opt out of the curated trip, and instead devote a couple hours or an entire day to an activity. And sometimes — adventure-minded activities are the only (or at least the best) way to explore some of the most off-the-beaten path places.
For example, Few people ever get a chance to visit California's Channel Islands National Park, likely because it's only accessible by boat. Once on the islands, there is no transportation, aside from foot, private boat, or kayak. Santa Barbara Adventure Co. has used that as an opportunity to offer roughly-four-hour adventure kayak tours through the sea caves around Scorpion Anchorage on Santa Cruz Island. Including the ferry transportation, it costs about $230. (The company also offers a $60 2-hour paddling adventure just off the Santa Barbara shoreline, which doesn't necessitate the ferry trip).
If you're on a budget: Some domestic travelers avoid high costs by planning trips themselves, though that requires more research and the burden of navigating unfamiliar trails on your own.
The internet can make it easy to plan active vacations on the cheap. Dirt In My Shoes, a national park-focused website run by a former park ranger, sells digital itineraries for less than $10. Sites like Strava and AllTrails have thrived due to user-generated reviews and maps, which provide tips for routes to take. Both sites offer free versions and low-cost subscription upgrades.
The AllTrails app can map out hiking trails. Photo courtesy of AllTrails.
Active vacations: A welcome trend?
Getting out of the house and staying more active is surely a welcome trend now more than ever, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that obesity may triple the risk of hospitalization due to COVID-19 infection.
But an increase in active vacationers is not without its challenges. National parks saw record numbers of visitors in 2021, leading to long lines and the need for reservations just to get in — hardly the socially distant, peaceful vacation some imagined.
Those high figures have also led to an uptick in people needing rescue. The National Park Service said that in September 2020, rangers responded to 37 helicopter medical evacuations in the Grand Canyon. That one month is nearly a quarter of the 164 helicopter evacuations done in all of 2018. The Park Service spends about $5 million annually rescuing visitors in the Grand Canyon.
“Many of these emergencies could have been prevented by hikers planning ahead, knowing their own physical abilities and choosing appropriate hiking distances,” according to a statement from the National Park Service.
But for most, active vacations have provided much-needed physical and mental health benefits.
“One of my favorite things is just getting up early in the morning to go on a run, catching the time of day as the sun is rising,” Schneiter says. “It helps me start the day feeling great. It invigorates me.”

Balkan Adventure (14 Days)
An excellent trip with an outstanding tour director (Sarah Rossi) and highly skilled bus driver (Bruno). Plenty of option excursion choices along with very good included tours with knowledgeable local guides. The only down side were two of the hotels - Hotel Marinela, Sofia Bulgaria, and Mercure Belgrade Excelsior - that were in desperate need of refurbishment not to mention functioning air conditioning and bathroom cleaning. Otherwise, great trip.

The Balkan Adventure Tour -12 days/11 nights from Skopje
We loved the hikes; only wished they could have been longer. We wish we didn't have to spend so much time driving, but we understand that there is no other way to see so many things in so few days. We would have liked to spend more time in Sarajevo. Don't schedule Nis for a Monday since the best sites are closed on Monday. Overall, it was a great introduction to the history and natural beauty of the Balkans, but be prepared for a lot of driving.
Scandinavian Secrets End Tallinn
Tour is great if you are looking for something which takes are of all of the logistics for you and offers free time to explore. Tour Guides were helpful and attentive, despite some challenging travellers being part of the tour.

7 Day - Complete Iceland
The Arctic Adventure 7-day Tour is an unforgettable journey through Iceland’s pristine landscapes. We were fortunate enough to experience it all, the breathtaking waterfalls all along our journey, the geothermal pools, the Northern Lights at our stay at the Wilderness Center, ( Norðurdalur in Fljótsdalur, a MUST see and stay hideaway) hike a glacier, explore ice caves, tour the stunning Snaefellsnes Peninsula, each day unfolds like a mythical saga— Our tour guide, Sigurður Magnússon possessed an essence of knowledge, kindness, and friendliness with an astute grasp of the history of Iceland, adding to our wonderful vacation in Iceland. His passion for wanting to provide us with the best possible experience and take away lasting memories was evident in his captivating narratives along the route and at each destination. He was able to combine facts, fables and mystery into each story. We appreciated his expertise and attention to detail.
Budapest to Split Group Rail Tour (18-35)
I’ve had the best two weeks on the Eastern European/Balkans tour with David. From initially booking with the company, I had a great help from Richard. He answered all my questions and eased my nerves as it was my first time backpacking as well as staying in hostels. They have honestly been brilliant and I haven’t been nervous at all. I felt very welcomed into the group when I started my tour and have loved the freedom to explore different countries. David has been great with organising activities and making sure the group is happy as well as giving advice on places to visit in your free time. He’s also great at picking out bars! The places that I’ve been have been amazing. After this trip, I’m sure to book another one soon as I’ve had the best time ever!

5 last-minute trip ideas for a summer escape to the USA
Sometimes, travel is carefully planned out several months or even a year ahead. Other times, it’s more of a spur-of-the-moment occasion. Both are exciting in their own right, but the latter often requires a little more creativity as hotels start to fill up.
The good news is, with a little insider knowledge, you can still visit many of the USA’s showstopper destinations this summer — and find some time away from the crowds. Five of our specialists have shared their last-minute trip recommendations below, from city hopping along the East Coast to an action-packed adventure in the Southwest. Each idea helps you see the USA’s classic sights from new perspectives, plus they start in a city with regular direct flights from the UK, giving you more time to explore.
Fly into New York for a city-hopping adventure
By specialist Shannon
With five boroughs and hundreds of hotels to choose from, a last-minute trip to New York (and its fellow East Coast cities) is almost always possible.
While there, I will, of course, help you see the sights that have shone on the silver screen for decades, whether it’s a ticket up to the Empire State Building Observatory or a cycling tour of Central Park that steers you away from the bustle.
I can also help you uncover different sides to The City That Never Sleeps, depending on your interests. Perhaps you’d like to delve into the diverse food scene in Williamsburg, or visit the Museum of Modern Art before opening hours with a private guide?
Then, you can hop on a train to explore other defining metropolises along the East Coast, including Washington D.C. , Philadelphia , and Boston (read Dean’s Boston recommendations below for inspiration). Each city has its own distinct feel, giving you a fresh perspective on the States every time you step onto the platform.
Get me there: Tie in a trip to New York with other cities along the East Coast , flying direct from the UK to New York City with Virgin Atlantic on the airline’s newest aircraft.
Fly into Boston for a history-steeped escape
By specialist Dean
Early summer in Boston , just before the local schools break up, is ideal for a last-minute escape. Warm, sunny days usher in the city’s outdoor events season, from dragon boat races down the Charles River to baseball games at Fenway Park.
It’s also my favourite time of year to walk the Freedom Trail, uncovering Boston’s revolutionary past. As long as you start planning now, I can pair you with an expert private guide. They’ll help bring history to life as you pass by the Old South Meeting House, the home of Paul Revere, and other historic landmarks in the North End.
If you’re flexible on dates and want a luxury stay, I recommend The Newbury, just across from the Boston Public Garden. The hotel is set in a restored heritage building with a sweeping staircase, its own library-inspired lounge, and light-filled rooms featuring stylish original artwork.
Early summer is also ideal for visiting the neighbouring seaside towns and countryside. Stop off at Salem for spooky sites free from the Halloween crowds or head to Providence for fresh lobster rolls on the waterfront. Further afield (and a little more immersed in nature), you can hike through Acadia National Park’s spruce forests and along its rock-strewn beaches.
Get me there: Explore Boston and Cape Cod on a 13-day trip showcasing the highlights of New England . Virgin Atlantic and partner Delta offer direct flights to the city, including three daily flights starting summer 2024.
Fly into San Francisco for a gastronomic getaway
By specialist Becky
It’s true, San Francisco will be busy come summer, but I can help you find ways of exploring the city and its surrounding scenery away from the crowds.
There’ll still be availability in the heart of the city, but it pays to stay a little way out during the busier months. I suggest Sausalito, just across the bridge, where you can stay on the waterfront overlooking the San Francisco Bay and skyline. You’ll be close by Muir Woods National Monument, too, where you can unwind and wander among the towering redwood trees in between jaunts to the city centre for clam chowder and cable-car climbs.
After a few days in the city, head to Bodega Bay to soak up the wild Pacific Coast away from the hubbub, before wining and dining in Sonoma and Napa Valley . Both are big on the map for gourmands, so I’ll give you my list of restaurant recommendations ahead of time — just be sure to make reservations as soon as possible. It’ll also be wedding season, so I advise visiting on weekdays rather than the weekend.
If you like, I can arrange for you to go on a private tour with an expert guide, who’ll choose the vineyards and varietals that best suit your tastes. You’ll also get to go behind the scenes to learn more about the wine-making process — knowing just how precise each stage is makes me appreciate every sip all the more.
Get me there: Take a 15-day road trip through Northern California , soaking up both city sights and wine-country delights as you go. You can fly direct into San Francisco from the UK with Virgin Atlantic.
Fly into Los Angeles for a coastal & desert retreat
By specialist Alex
Rest and relaxation, sprinkled with some light exploration — that’s how I’d describe a summer trip to Southern California. It’ll be very hot, so only go if you love the sun. If you do, you can enjoy coastal adventures, desert luxury, and feet-up poolside recreation.
Santa Monica is my favourite part of the city to stay in because there's so much going on, from restaurant-lined boardwalks to the artsy shops of Venice Beach. That said, Los Angeles is busy during the summer months, so if you want a little respite from the crowds, you could stay just outside the city in Malibu, which is more laid-back. If you do, I suggest visiting Malibu Farm Cafe for a pier-side farm-to-table feast. In LA itself, I can also arrange for you to see the city’s movie-eternalised sights from the back of a 1970s convertible classic car.
Then, head to Palm Springs for a luxury desert retreat. Peruse art and mid-century modern architecture under the breezy air conditioning, lounge by the pool as you sip cocktails, and sink into a massage at the spa. In the evening, once the temperatures fall, you can join an expert for a private stargazing experience in a remote spot of Joshua Tree National Park.
Once rejuvenated, head to Orange County for a few of days at the beach, where you can learn to surf like the locals, before wrapping up your West Coast trip with a stay in San Diego . Here, you can kayak out to sea caves, indulge in authentic Mexican cuisine (you’re just minutes from the border), and spot blue whales along the coast aboard a sailing schooner.
Get me there: Take in the sights of Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and San Diego on a 21-day trip to the Golden State , flying direct from the UK with Virgin Atlantic.
Fly into Salt Lake City for an active trip away from the crowds
By specialist Mary
The Southwest has so many national parks to choose from, particularly in Utah , making it ideal for a last-minute adventure trip this summer (go as early as possible for more pleasant temperatures). Most people flock to Zion, so I suggest heading to Capitol Reef National Park and Moab instead, both of which are accessible from Salt Lake City . In these underappreciated alternatives, you’ll get to experience the Southwest’s sweeping red-rock vistas with fewer people around.
In Capitol Reef, you can explore Mars-like Cathedral Valley in a 4x4, go in search of 2,000-year-old Fremont culture petroglyphs, and spend the evening admiring the constellation-lit night sky in a secluded corner of the park, or beside the campfire as you toast marshmallows.
My favourite stay here is Cougar Ridge, a sprawling resort set beneath the cliffs just on the edge of the park. It’s actually a working ranch, too, so you can meet the resident horses, alpacas, donkeys, and ducks during your morning wanders.
Moab may be the USA’s adventure capital, but you can still explore it with a luxury twist. I can include a hike through Arches National Park with a private guide, who’ll come bearing gifts: a basket full of your favourite snacks to nibble on while you walk and a picnic lunch to enjoy on the sun-warmed earth while you rest.
Get me there: You can visit the national parks of the Southwest on a 14-day trip to the USA , flying direct into Salt Lake City from the UK with Virgin Atlantic’s partner Delta Airways.
Fly away with Virgin Atlantic this summer
With more flights to the USA than ever before, Virgin Atlantic and partner Delta Air Lines can whisk you to dozens of destinations Stateside. There are daily direct flights to some of our best-loved cities, and on certain routes, you can also enjoy Virgin Atlantic’s new A330-900neo aircraft, which offers Upper-Class passengers the choice of flying in the Retreat Suite. In addition to the usual Upper Class amenities, these two exclusive suites provide even more space to relax, a larger entertainment screen, and the option to dine with your travel companion .
