My New BGT Stability Tour 2 Polar Putter Shaft

Breakthrough Golf Technology originally introduced their Stability putter shafts with the intent of creating a new feel and an evolved design in putter shafts that’s a better match for modern putters. With the original design being somewhat larger and heavier, BGT would go on to launch a “slimmer” version based on Tour feedback looking for a closer transition from traditional steel to something more stable and similarly balanced. In response to that feedback, BGT launched the Stability Tour model. With further feedback, BGT has launched the Stability Tour 2 Polar shaft. We’ll cover the differences you need to know about in this review.

BGT went with a very distinct “polar ice” look hence the name Stability Tour 2 Polar . They call it a “tactile, soft touch coating” and it won’t scratch or discolor. Admittedly, my time with the putter has been limited, but I haven’t noticed any scratching yet myself. For a sharp contrast, BGT cerakotes the steel extension black. There’s a cool sort of Star Wars Stormtrooper look going on which looks sick when paired with the right putter head. I should also point out that the Tour 2 Polar has a thinner profile so it will look closer to what you’re used to when looking down a standard putter shaft. Sure, it may take some adjusting, but you should be focusing on the ball anyway.

How Does it Feel?

The major difference in the BGT Stability Tour 2 Polar shaft is its feel. BGT built the Polar with “30% more high modulus graphite” which creates a softer and more responsive feel. As part of their efforts to increase stability, the original Stability shaft was a little harsher and muted. The Stability Tour lines have a softer feel with better feedback that’s a better match for putting. At least, that’s my opinion.

With Stability in the name, you should expect a certain level of firmness. While the response is good, you should expect the putter to feel a little more rigid. This helps keep the putter head from wanting to twist so you have better control and accuracy.

On-Course Performance

All of my experience to this point with Breakthrough Golf Technology Stability shafts has been with blade heads. The experiences were generally positive, but I thought I should try something different for this Stability Tour 2 Polar review. Given the idea is to have more stability in the putting stroke, I thought it might be worth seeing what it’s like pairing the Tour 2 Polar with a high MOI mallet. The Cobra King 3D Printed Agera I recently reviewed immediately came to mind. Let me make this clear…this was exactly the right choice.

To catch you up real quick, MOI means “moment of inertia”. In short, this is easily described as how much the club wants to twist/rotate at impact. A higher MOI means the club wants to twist less, which then should mean you’re more accurate. In this case, the high-MOI Agera paired with the Stability Tour 2 Polar resulted in incredible control. I felt the shaft itself smoothed out the putting stroke nicely and the mallet head kept things quiet and clean. In terms of performance, there really isn’t much else to say. I definitely felt more in control of the putter with the BGT in it than I did with regular steel and my putting was legitimately better with it.

Final Thoughts – Breakthrough Golf Technology Stability Tour 2 Polar Shaft

If you’re a player that feels like they could benefit from more stability in your putting stroke, Breakthrough Golf Technology shafts are worth testing. But keep in mind that putting gets really subjective really fast. Regardless of setup, aim, and stroke path, the putter has to feel right in your hands and look good to your eye. For these very reasons, I’d strongly encourage anyone to get fitted for BGT Stability shafts before diving in because they are certainly unique and an intriguing option in this new multi-material low-torque putter shaft market. I’m a really big fan of this mallet/Stability Tour 2 Polar combination at the moment, which I honestly did not expect. Now I have a nice little putter battle taking place in my bag…

Have you reviewed LAGP’s putter shaft that’s popular on tour? Was wondering how this would compare. Also, does this shaft work with any hosel types? I know there are some out there that only work with the plumbers neck

We have not reviewed the LA Shaft, but there are some pretty interesting theories out there on it. I’ll just leave it at that.

As far as options for the BGT stuff, the nature of this shaft allows for connecting to any putter. See the putter referenced in this post. It’s not a plumber’s neck.

I put a BGT Stability Tour shaft in an Odyssey O-Works Black #7 last year and paired it with a Super Stroke Traxion Tour 3.0 grip and a 75 gram CounterCore weight and it has been a great combination. How good has it been? Well a few months ago I drove off from the cart area in front of the clubhouse before my round and my bag was not secure. It fell off the cart onto the cement and landed directly on my putter. The putter shaft broke. I had to resort to using a similar back-up putter. Within days I ordered two more Stability Tour shafts, went on EBay to find another O-Works Black #7 putter, got two matching SuperStroke grips and counterweights and built up two putters with identical specs. One is my gamer and the other is my back-up that I also practice with at home on the putting mat. I will not be without one from now on. According to my Arccos stats, putting is my best skill according to my strokes gained. My handicap index has come down and I make fewer putts and more birdies than I did before. Some of my playing partners give me a hard time about using a “non-oscillating” putter shaft and paying up for it. But since I have put it into play, I win more money off of them and essentially they have paid for the putter shaft despite teasing me about it. One of my friends who has struggled with putting got fitted for new clubs at Club Champion in the fall and got a new Bettinardi putter with the same shaft that I have. Guess what he is the most improved player in our Men’s group since then. If the concept did’t work you wouldn’t be seeing PGA Tour Players using them and every shaft manufacturer scrambling to copy it. KBS, Paderson, Fujikura, LA Golf and Odyssey now all have some variation of a lower torque and more stable putter shaft.  

I’d love to try something like this but man that price just is hard to justify

I bought a Toulon Las Vegas with Odyssey Stroke Lab shaft last year to compare to the O-Works Black #7 with the BGT Stability Tour shaft. No comparison, the O-Works Black #7 with the Stability Tour shaft felt and performed better for me. I gave the Toulon Las Vegas putter to my wife’s cousin who had invited me to play in a Member Guest Tournament with him at his club as a thank you gift for the invite as he would not allow me to pay for anything that weekend.

Bumping this. I built some putters over the last few days, and went with the Polar and the Fire Stability shafts. first impressions: it’s definitely interesting, comparable to the Stroke Lab in general looks, but much much thicker. Colors are fantastic. The Polar is a crisp white with a matte like finish. Fire is the glossy red with some pearl flake in it. The red is maybe just a touch darker than the Stroke Lab red. Building is pretty simple. You can send your putter to BGT to build it for you, or have the components sent to you for a DIY project. The steel tip slides into the tip of the graphite section of the shaft, and comes to a stop about 3 inches or so into it. Some epoxy work and it’s good to go into the putter head. today I put a couple SuperStroke Pistol GT Tour 1.0 grips on them and started hitting some putts. The feel is totally different than what I’ve experienced with traditional steel or the stroke lab. Stability is a very fitting name for the shaft. The weight, balanced and stroke all feel very fluid but precise. First round tomorrow!

Tour de Romandie: Thibau Nys wins stage 2 as Plapp attacks for GC

Lidl-Trek rider snags overall lead as Godon distanced

How it unfolded

Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek) survived an all-day breakaway and still had enough left in the tank to win a three-rider sprint to secure the stage 2 victory and the overall lead at the Tour de Romandie.

Nys was part of an original six-rider breakaway, but only he and Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) made it to the last kilometre of the final 7km ascent before being joined by bridger Australian Champion Luke Plapp (Ineos-Grenadiers).

Plapp led the trio into the last 500 metres of the climb and then surged in an attempt to win the stage, but Vendrame hung onto his wheel and jumped through an inside bend in the road with 300 metres to go, with Nys on his wheel.

Nys was the fastest of the three when he launched his sprint in the final metres to take the stage win and the lead in the overall classification on the hilltop finish in Salvan/Les Marécottes. Vendrame finished in second place, and Plapp was forced to settle for third on the day.

Nys now leads the general classification by four seconds ahead of Vendrame and 22 seconds ahead of Plapp as the race continues with stage 3 on Friday.

The second stage at the Tour de Romandie was a 171km race from Fribourg to Salvan/Les Marécottes. There was only one categorised ascent mid-race over Les Mosses: a 12.8km climb with an average gradient of 4.2% and a final 7km climb to the finish line that averaged 7.5% into Salvan-Les Marecottes.

A breakaway set off after the first 20km of racing with Xandro Meurisse (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek), Roger Adrià (Bora-hansgrohe), Nikias Arndt (Bahrain-Victorious), Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), and Sean Flynn (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) building a lead out to four minutes before reaching the base of the climb to Les Mosses.

The breakaway split apart along the upper slopes of the ascent, with Ardnt and Flynn falling off the pace. But Meurisse, Nys, Adria, Vendrame, and Azparren pushed on through the valley roads and still held a three-minute gap as they approached the base of the final climb.

On the lower slopes of the ascent, Azparren lost contact, reducing the breakaway to four. The dwindled peloton, led by Ineos-Grenadiers, cut the gap to just one minute with 4km remaining.

Nys pushed the pace on the mid-section of the ascent, shredding Adria from the breakaway in the process, while Vendrame and a struggling Meurisse sat on his wheel. Vendrame soon moved to the front, and Nys carried on in pursuit of the stage.

Overnight leader Dorion Godon (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) was dropped from the main field with 3km to go after attacks from Simon Yates (Jayco AlUla) and then Luke Plapp (Ineos Grenadiers) followed by Florian Lipowitz (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Plapp and Lipowitz soon reached the breakaway of Nys, Vendrame, and Meurisse with just over a kilometre to go. Plapp surged again, but this time, only Nys and Vendrame could follow the Australian Champion.

Plapp led the trio into 500 metres to go, then surged with 300 metres out, but it was too soon, and Vendrame came around him through the final inside bend. As Vendrame raced for the line, Nys sprinted off his wheel to take the stage win.

State Of The Art Performance - Look, Balance & Feel

The Stability Tour 2 putter shaft is the result of feedback from the best golfers and coaches in the world and offers the same state of the art performance as the original Stability shaft with a few key differences.

Stability Tour 2 has a slimmer profile and offers a softer feel.  It will match the balance point and flex profile of steel with 30% more carbon fibre for a crisp, responsive sound and improved control preferred by better players.

The BGT Stability Tour 2 Shaft is available as an upper section/body in 0.370".  Each upper section/body can be supplied with a steel tip (0.355", 0.370" or 0.390").

The version you choose is determined by the model of putter you are fitting the stability shaft to.

1  x BGT Stability Tour 2 Polar Putter Shaft 0.370" Body (80g) - Carbon Fibre In Gloss Red. 1  x Steel Shaft Tip - Either 0.355", 0.370" or 0.390" (25g) - Steel In Matte Black.
