Olympic Games: Everything you need to about know Golf at Paris 2024
Golf will be one of 32 sports to feature in Paris 2024, with 60 men and 60 women competing in individual tournaments for a third consecutive Summer Games.
Here is everything you need to know, including where and when the competition will be held, how players qualify and who are the current Olympic golf gold medallists.
When does golf at the 2024 Olympic Games take place?
The Games will be staged from July 26 to August 11.
The men’s Olympic golf event is set to take place from August 1-4, with the women’s tournament being staged from August 7-10.
Where will the Olympic golf events be played?
Both events will be played at Le Golf National , a European Tour Destinations member venue, located in Guyancourt on the outskirts of Paris.
The Albatros course previously staged the 2018 Ryder Cup and has been a long-serving host of the Open de France on the DP World Tour.
How many golfers will compete at the 2024 Olympics?
There will be 120 athletes competing in the golf competition of Paris 2024, 60 in each of the men’s and women’s events, which is exactly the same amount as Tokyo 2020 .
The host nation France will secure two quota places, one per gender. The other 118 quota places (59 per gender) will be decided by the Olympic Golf Ranking (OGR).
What is the format for the 2024 Olympic golf events?
Players in both the men’s and women’s events will play a 72-hole strokeplay competition across four days, with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded for each of the top three finishers.
There is no cut and in the event of a tie for any of the medals, a sudden death play-off will take place to determine the medallists.
Who are the reigning Olympic golf champions?
It was a Team USA double at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, postponed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Xander Schauffele and Nelly Korda won the gold medals, in the men's and women's competitions respectively.
In the men's competition, Rory Sabbatini (Slovakia) earned the silver with a 10-under-par 61 on the final day, while CT Pan (Chinese Tapai) came out on top of a seven-man play-off on the fourth extra hole. In the women's competition, Japan's Mone Inami claimed silver and New Zealand's Lydia Ko added a bronze medal to the silver she had won at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
When did golf return to the Olympic Games?
Golf made a long-awaited return to the Olympic Games in 2016, played in Rio for the first time in 112 years.
First introduced in Paris in 1900 with just a men's individual tournament and men's team competition, the Games then returned in 1904 in St. Louis with both a men and women's individual event. The sport was planned to be included in 2008 but was cancelled, and it would be instead a wait of over a century for them to return.
Golf officially made its return eight years ago, and will now make its fifth appearance in the Games at Paris 2024.
How do players qualify for Paris 2024?
Each event will comprise 60-player fields with golfers qualifying based on the official International Golf Federation (IGF) world ranking list published on June 17, 2024 for men and June 24, 2024 for women .
The top 15 players will all qualify automatically (maximum of four per National Olympic Committee (NOC).
Beyond the top 15, players will be eligible based on the world rankings, with a maximum of two eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more players among the top 15.
The OGR is calculated every Monday following completion of the previous week’s tournaments
Points are awarded to athletes based on their final positions in each ranking event, with performances in events with stronger fields earning more points, in accordance with a points distribution schedule approved by the IGF. The OGR is ordered according to the average points that athletes manage to accumulate over a two-year qualifying period.
Who is currently in line to qualify for Paris 2024?
As it stands, a total of 60 golfers from 32 countries are in line to qualify for the men's event at the Olympics in 2024. The USA have the most qualified players with four players inside the top ten in the OWGR.

2024 DP World Tour schedule: Tournaments, dates, purses and venues
The 2024 DP World Tour (European Tour) schedule has been announced, with a significant overhaul to the schedule that golf fans have been accustomed to seeing in recent years.
The most significant changes to the schedule are the creation of different seven different blocks of the schedule. There are five separate "swings" in the schedule: Opening, International, Asian, European and Closing. The other two portions of the schedule are the Closing Nine and the DP World Tour playoffs, a two-event slate that will determine the Race to Dubai champion.
At the end of each swing, the top five players in Race to Dubai points from that stretch will get a share of a $1 million bonus pool.
The idea behind the schedule is to create incentives to continue playing on the DP World Tour through particular stretches of the year.

"I'm taking my European tour membership again" – Sergio Garcia says he's ‘not giving up' on the Ryder Cup dream
S ergio Garcia is not giving up on his Ryder Cup dream that easily. The Spanish veteran resigned from his membership on the DP World Tour last year to avoid the fine imposed by the circuit after he joined LIV Golf.
The DP World Tour fined £100,000 per tournament for all the European Tour players who joined and played on the LIV Golf. To avoid these fines, Garcia, along with Ian Poulter, Richard Bland, and Lee Westwood , gave up their DP World Tour membership, which ultimately resulted in their exit from the Ryder Cup.
However, Sergio Garcia is considering rejoining the DP World Tour so that he can compete at the biennial team event. In an interview with Jason Tartick, Garcia recently opened up about his Ryder Cup chances and revealed he was retaking his European Tour membership.
During the show, the host asked Garcia, "Does he think the landscape of the Ryder Cup and what's happening now will look dramatically different in 3 or 5 years?"
To which Garcia said:
"I hope not. I mean obviously I'm not giving up on it and I'm taking my European tour membership again to at least give myself the best chance possible of trying to make a team and be eligible for it. But I hope it doesn't because that's what keeps the Ryder Cup pure."
"And even though you don't get paid if you make the Ryder Cup team, if you play in The Ryder Cup team you contracts that do go off a little bit. So you don't make it that week, but you do make it on appearance and stuff like that. So it's not like you do make it but not in that week."(29:49-30:40)
It is important to note that Sergio Garcia is widely known for his Ryder Cup performances. He played in the prestigious tournament nine times with splendid records of 22 victories.
Sergio Garcia's Ryder Cup record
Sergio Garcia made his Ryder Cup debut in 1999, the same year in which he started his professional journey. In the tournament held at The Country Club, the European team tasted a loss by one point, but Garcia excelled with his performance, winning four matches and tying one.
He won both of his day-one matches and started the second-day foursome with a victory. However, the afternoon match resulted in a tie, followed by his victory in the final Sunday head-to-head match.
Sergio Garcia has played in 49 matches in the Ryder Cup and has a record of 22-12-7 (W-L-H). Speaking of singles, he boasts an amazing record of 4-4-1, while his best is recorded in the foursome with 10-4-3. In the Four-Ball matches, Garcia's overall score is 8-4-3.
The Ryder Cup was held last year in Rome, where the European team won the match, and the next one will take place in 2025 in New York.
How To Earn A European Tour Card
There are many ways to qualify for a European Tour card which gives membership to the European Tour, now known as the DP World Tour
- Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter
There are two basic ways to get a European Tour card and thus membership of the European Tour, or DP World Tour as it is now known : you have it and retain it, or you qualify to move onto the Tour. There are many different routes to retain membership, just as there are for qualification.
The DP World tour operates, in effect, a promotion and relegation system with the Challenge Tour. It used to be that the top 110 on the Race to Dubai were guaranteed ‘staying up’ and the top players on the Challenge Tour’s Road to Mallorca were ‘promoted’. Those promoted this way used to be the top 15 but with Q-School (more of which later) suspended during the pandemic, it has been the top 20. Similarly, it has been the top 121 on the Race to Dubai who have ‘stayed up’ recently.
There are other ways to retain Tour membership which do not rely upon the final position in the Race to Dubai. Winning a DP World Tour event earns exemption from ‘relegation’, with the more prestigious the tournament, the more the number of seasons exemption a victory earns. Race to Dubai winners also gain lengthy exemptions. Some players can even retain membership on the basis of career performances, under a category of membership known rather delightfully and officially as ‘Legends’.
But how can you qualify for the Tour for the next season if not already on it during the current season? Well, a strong finishing position on the Challenge Tour’s order of merit is one way. Winning the order of merit of other selected tours around the world also brings with it DP World Tour membership.
But what if you are a golfer who fancies joining the Tour and none of the above applies? For them there is Qualifying School, or Q-School as it is known.
This was not held in 2020 or 2021 because of the pandemic. But ordinarily it is run over three stages and the top 25 in the final stage earn Tour membership. Some players are exempt from having to enter at stage one, and automatically qualify for either stage two or stage three.
Stages one and two are four-round tournaments at various venues. Stage three is a six-round tournament at one venue in Spain (most recently at in Tarragona at Lumine Golf Club , now renamed Infinitum ) with 156 entrants, with a cut after four rounds. The top 25 win Tour membership.

It costs to enter Q-School – the fee was €1,800 in 2019, the last time Q-School has been held. That year 842 golfers teed it up in the first stage across nine different venues with 183 players qualifying through this process to join those players whose exemption took them straight into stage two.
You do not need to become a PGA Professional if you fancy a shot at Tour glory and a European Tour card. The good news is any male amateur golfer can enter Q-School so long as they have a handicap of 0.4 or lower. The bad news is that shot is probably the longest of longshots: the last time Q-School was held, more than 1,000 golfers entered in quest of those 25 spots.
