To maximize the benefits of the card:

  • Keep track of spending and remaining balance.

Other options include other brands of travel money cards, credit cards with no foreign transaction fees, and traditional cash exchange. Each has its pros and cons, depending on individual travel needs and spending habits.

Post Office Travel Card review

Claire Millard

The Post Office Travel Card is a prepaid travel card you can load in cash or online, to switch to the currency you need for spending and withdrawals. It’s not linked to your regular bank account, and can be managed from your smartphone, for secure spending across 23 currencies.

Before you order a Post Office Travel Card check out this full review - we’ll look at what the card can do , how to order your card and how much it’ll cost .

And to help you compare we’ll also touch on Post Office Travel Card alternatives like Wise and Starling, which may offer cheaper and more flexible options for taking travel money abroad.

post office travel card error 6004

TL;DR - it's a solid prepaid card

  • The card supports most major currencies for holidays, including Euros (Europe), Lira (Turkey) and UAE Dirhams (Dubai)
  • Several top-up methods , with the option of doing so online or in-store
  • Only convert what you want to spend; good for holiday budgeting

However, there are some downsides.

  • There are better exchange rates available with other travel cards
  • You'll get a worse exchange rate (a.k.a "buy-back rates") when converting leftover foreign currency to pounds

Find out more about the card on the Post Office website or click the button below to purchase a card. Order a card

What's in this guide?

What is the post office travel money card, how does it work.

  • Fees & limits

How do I get a Post Office Travel Money Card?

What happens when the card expires, what are the alternatives.

The Post Office Travel Money Card is a prepaid card you can top up in cash or from your bank account, in any of 23 supported currencies.

Once you have funds on your card you can use it as you would a regular debit card, for contactless and mobile payments, and cash withdrawals. There’s no fee to spend currencies you hold on your card, although other transaction fees do apply depending on how you use the account.

Use your Post Office card to buy travel money before you head off on holiday, or top up as you go online.

As pictured, you can also manage, view and freeze your card in the Post Office app for security.

post office travel card error 6004

  • Top up your card in cash at a Post Office or online by purchasing one of 23 different currencies
  • If you choose to top up in GBP and convert later, you’ll be charged an administration fee of 1.5%, from a minimum of 3 GBP up to a maximum of 50 GBP
  • Exchange rates are shown in the Post Office app, and may include a markup on the market exchange rate - but rates often improve if you top up more
  • It’s free to spend currencies you hold. You can also spend unsupported currencies, but a foreign transaction fee of 3% will apply

It’s worth noting that the Post Office exchange rates are shown in the Post Office app before you convert your funds. They may include a markup, which is an extra fee added into the rate applied to switch to the currency you need.

Another thing worth noting is that the exchange rate gets better for higher top up amounts - meaning you’ll pay a smaller markup the more you add to your card.

Using a markup is pretty common but does make it tricky to see what you’re really paying for your foreign currency transactions.

Spending limits and card fees

Before you order a Post Office Travel Card it’s good to know a bit about the fees and limits that apply to card usage.

When you transact with your Post Office Travel Money Card, there are also fees to pay.

While these do vary slightly by currency, they’re roughly similar.

It’s easy to get your Post Office Travel Card online or in person by calling into a Post Office near you. Here’s what you’ll need to do.

  • Head to the Post Office website
  • Select "Order Your Card >"
  • Top up in your preferred currency - there’s a minimum top up of 50 GBP, through to a maximum of 5,000 GBP
  • Input personal details following the prompts
  • Delivery of your card will take 2-3 days by post
  • Head to your local Post Office branch
  • Show a valid form of ID (driving licence, passport or EEA ID card)
  • Apply in branch and load your card

The expiry date for your card will be printed on the back of the card - usually it’s valid for 3 years from the point you order it.

Once your card has expired you’ll pay a monthly inactivity fee of £2 per month if you don’t redeem your balance within 12 months of the card expiring. This fee continues until there’s no remaining balance, at which point your account will be closed.

If you’re not sure whether the Post Office Card is right for you, check out a few alternatives to see which gives you the best balance of cost and convenience.

The Wise card allows you to hold and exchange 50+ currencies, and spend in 170+ countries. It's a fully-fledged debit card, meaning it works at home just as well as it does abroad.

There’s no markup on the exchange rate, and they are super transparent about the fees (usually around 0.4% for foreign spending) they'll charge you.

Help! I’m abroad but can’t top up my Post Office travel card

I recently took out a Post Office pre-paid travel card before travelling to Asia. I put some money on it before leaving but have been unable to top up for four days. The website appears OK but all transactions fail. The error message that appears advises customers to contact their card issuer, so I assumed the problem lay with my bank. But my bank says it has received no requests for payment and, indeed, the error message appears before the verification page.

Now I’m stuck on the other side of the world with no access to my money. I can’t be the only person who’s been left high and dry by this. RK, London

Indeed you are not. The Post Office tells me that a “payment processing issue” meant that over three days some customers were unable to top up online. “We have been working hard to rectify this and can advise that this issue has now been resolved,” says a spokesperson. It’s unimpressive that all that hard work didn’t include posting a warning on the website, instead allowing customers to blame their banks.

The Post Office travel card is supposed to provide a secure way to transport money, but critics have complained of difficulty finding businesses that will accept it, and low buy-back rates when trying to redeem money left on it at the end of a break. Moreover, transactions are not protected by the Consumer Credit Act.

You have now successfully topped up and the PO has apologised, but in future make sure you have a credit card to hand in case the card lets you down.

If you need help email Anna Tims at [email protected] or write to Your Problems, The Observer, Kings Place, 90 York Way, London N1 9GU. Include an address and phone number.

Moscow plans measures to woo tourists, Foreign Tourist Card in the offing

Moscow, Russia

To woo tourists from across the world, the Moscow City Tourism Committee is taking several measures and to address payment-related issues the Russian government is planning to come out with a virtual ‘Foreign Tourist Card’, that will enable cashless payments for various services.

During the Covid pandemic, the tourist flow to Moscow had dropped significantly. However, the number of Indian tourists visiting Moscow is slowly witnessing an uptrend and with tourist-friendly measures like e-visa, this number is likely to grow in the coming months.

“We are still on our way to restore the flow of Indian tourists in Moscow like it used to be before the pandemic. Before the pandemic, there was very steady growth like 12-15 per cent on a y-o-y basis,” said Bulat Nurmukhanov, Head of International Cooperation Division of Moscow City Tourism Committee.

Travelling to Moscow has now become easier as tourists from India and 54 other countries can apply for an electronic visa to enter Russia from August 1, 2023.

Moreover, initiatives like the Foreign Tourist Card will help address payment-related issues, after the departure of MasterCard and Visa from the Russian market, Bulat said.

“There is an initiative by the Federal Government of Russia to develop a ‘Foreign Tourist Card’. The initiative is under process, and some legislative documents have been amended in order to make this card possible.

“The idea behind this card is that a person back home in India can remotely apply for this card and then he/she can transfer money from the personal bank account to this bank account,” Bulat added.

This will be a virtual card and this will be issued to the person back home. This card will address the payment-related issues of foreign tourists in Moscow.

To give more travel options to tourists, in March this year, Russian flag carrier Aeroflot increased the frequency of its flight services on the Delhi-Moscow route to seven times a week against four weekly services earlier.

India and Russia “in principle” agreed to revise their bilateral air services agreement earlier this month, allowing Russian carriers to operate up to 64 flights per week from 52 to India.

Russian carriers are allowed to operate these flights to six Indian cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Kolkata, Amritsar and Ahmedabad.

“We are really looking forward to the Indian Airlines to restore their flight connections to Moscow. Right now only Aeroflot is operating flights between Delhi and Goa. However, there are some other options available from Dubai to Moscow,” Bulat said.

In a bid to tackle the language barrier that makes arriving in and navigating in a new country quite intimidating, there are seven tourist centres across Moscow. It also has a call centre for foreign tourists in case they need any help, Bulat said.

“We are working on translating the city navigation into English. Our businesses are really active and quick to respond to what the market requires,” Bulat added.
